Yes, surgery sucks. But you know what sucks more? Hurting all the time.

VSG 2013, RNY conversion 2019 due to GERD. Trendweight here!
It's time for it to go...there's no hope for it going away over time. It will continue getting worse.
This is an extremely common side-effect to drastic weight loss, especially after wls. Even with those who are taking gallstone prevention meds, most wind up under the knife again in a couple of years for this. It seems to only prolong the issue rather than eliminate it. I am totally thankful that my surgeon was more proactive, and just removed the GB and appendix during my procedure. She saw them as two things not missed that in the event of acute abdominal pain, can be eliminated as causes, thus eliminating the delay to pinpoint the problem.
Now, in the meantime, two big triggers are any kind of fat or caffeine, so avoid those at all costs.

It felt like one long labor contraction in the center of my abdomen. The pain crescendos and retreats but doesn't go away. A ho****er bottle and keeping myself completely immobile helped.

Interesting! I'd never heard of a hiatal hernia causing abdominal pain like that.
Neither did I. But post op RNY Peterson's space internal hernia not only can hurt like that if the small intestine get inside and twisted. In worse case - small intestine twisting and strangulation can cause blood supply cut off, tissue necrosis, and death due to that. Really serious stuff.
There are many hernias that can cause issue. Or scar tissue.

I had my gallbladder out roughly six weeks after my son was born, almost 16 years ago... long before the thought of WLS...
And I related it to labor pains much like you describe here... complete immobility on the ground, lying flat, praying to whatever God might happen to hear (I think I covered them all)!
Worst pain ever. I'm sorry you're going through this! Don't put it off though, go see your doc... the pains won't go away on their own!
