Medicine's best obesity treatment is also its most misunderstood

Americans keep dieting to lose weight, but bariatric surgery is the most effective tool out there.

Thought this was a really good article.

Very Interesting!

I wish they would study the correlation between Type II diabetes remission and the RNY. It seems, from what I've seen around here, that this is a BIG health benefit, and I just haven't seen enough put out there for people to know about this.

This is a good study.

Researchers looked at 4434 type II diabetics who had RNY. 68.2% of them saw their diabetes go into remission within 5 years of WLS. Of those people, 35.1% redeveloped diabetes within 5 years; the people with relapse tended to have had diabetes for longer and their blood sugar was poorly controlled before surgery.

Great summary, AntiChick! Thanks for sharing. I passed it along to a friend on the fence about surgery.

I saw this in Facebook. Sadly, inspite of the evidence that shows the validity of wls, people were still commenting on how awful it was and that it was ineffective/dangerous. Siiigh.

If people really understood and accepted scientific evidence, we would all be 100% vaccinated, nobody would bat an eye at genetically-modified produce, chiropractors would be laughed out of business, and people wouldn't launch homemade rockets to "prove" that the Earth is flat.

I've largely given up hope at this point.
