Do you take Iron Supplements while on Iron Infusions?
I emailed my doctor this question and shes not in until Tuesday,
So I had an mini Iron infusion on Monday, and will be getting one more in two weeks, I've been fighting to get iron infusions for a long time since my ferritin dropped to 4 and i feel horrible, finally my doctor agreed to give me a couple but i know this wont be enough i read from previous post about Proferrin working for some in raising their levels and I want to try it, I've tried numerous kinds of iron supplements and nothing has worked, I did have a round of iron infusions last year which raise my levels to 36 but my levels dropped again,
have you guys taken supplements while on infusions ?
any recommendations?
I take Proferrin, which is heme iron, and it has fewer side effects (e.g. constipation or gas, dietary restrictions where you can't take it with calcium, coffee, or meals) and it seems to absorb better. My iron levels are good on it so far. It may cost more than other types of iron but to me is worth it.
Thank you so much for your reply, I really don't want to keep fighting the doctor to get me infusions they are mini a low dose and in reality is only a small jump on the numbers, i have so much faith this type of iron might also work for me, I don't mind investing the money to try it.
can I ask how many pills a day do you take?
Are you low on iron because you're not absorbing iron? Or are you low on iron because you're losing blood somewhere? Even before surgery I had iron issues and had infusions. My issues were a lack of iron obsorbtion and losing too much blood during my menstrual cycle. I haven't had any problems since I've gotten a Mirena IUD and my cycle stopped. That was before RNY. We'll see if my irons gone down on my next doctor appointment. I really don't think so. I usually crave ice when my iron is low.
Thanks for the reply, well my periods are long and heavy that's one reason, also tried many supplements pills and liquid iron and my numbers wont move that might be another issue,
I've tried the Mirena and made me so sick, they had to remove it within 2 months of having it in, now we are thinking of an ablation but I am not sure which route to take.
even with all this issues my doctor argues that I am ok every time the iron issue comes up
I was anemic before the surgery and got worse after. I found an over the counter supplement that has Vitamin C in it to help with absorbtion of the iron. It is GREAT! I get it at WALGREENS for $16. It is called VITRON-C. I take double the dose (2 pills) daily. It brought my iron levels back up to NORMAL very quickly. I recommend it. It is coated and it does not cause gas or constipation.
