Whats that shakey feeling?

So, my VSG was 5/26/16.

Every so often I get some sweats and feel shakey. I immediately stop whatever I'm doing and drink a decent amount of water or say propel/smar****er for electrolytes, and then get some food into my body
I'm not sure what it is, since I dont have a blood sugar tester. Do ya'll think thats what it is, possibly low blood sugar? I've checked my blood pressure when it happens and its fine

Just wondering if anyone else has any experience (I'm sure the answer is yes, which is whats great about this website)

So I'm guessing it's low blood sugar. You can buy an relatively inexpensive monitor over the counter at somewhere like Target or Walgreens.

I've found that the further out I get from surgery, the more hypoglycemic/ reactive Hypoglycemic I get. I can't skip meals, and I can't eat too many carbs or it happens to me.

Something like peanut butter crackers will bring your sugars back up pretty quickly in a pinch, but a steady diet of low carb/ frequent eating (for me, every 3-4 hours or else it happens more often) helps tremendously.

Hi Chris,

I have hypoglycemia. It starts with my getting shaky and sweating. When this started happening to me I didn't know what it was. I had a tester kit my husband used and when I checked my blood sugar it was in the 30's or 40's. If I don't get something to eat (I use peanut butter, honey or glucose tabs) my thought process gets really fuzzy and then afterwards I get cold and feel like I ran a marathon. I usually sleep for a couple of hours afterwards.

It does not cost much, get a tester kit and when you start to get shaky take your blood sugar and it will confirm it's low blood sugar. If it's not, then talk to your doctor/surgeon on what may be going on.

Thanks everyone I'll grab a kit since the consensus seems to be that :) I'm gonna hold off on the shake weight for now tho

I meant to look at one while I was just at walgreens but forgot (whoops)... had to get a finger splint for my injury from hanging christmas lights (how lame lol)

So I've learned while the tester kits are cheap- you seem to need a prescription for the test strips/lancets.

Not sure why my doc gave me a kit without a script for strips or lancets.

Odd. I was told I only needed a script if I wanted insurance to pay. I've gotten both lancets and strips over the years in person at Wal-Mart and Walgreens, and online from Walgreens and Amazon.

Hi,

those are classic symptoms of hypoglycemia aka low blood sugar. The fact that food improves it validates this. Somehow you have to get more carbs in because it can be dangerous. In severe cases you can lose consciousness. You should talk to your nutritionist. You should definitely carry a carb snack around with you in your pocket when you go out.

By any chance are these shakey episodes about 30-60 minutes after eating? If so they may be reactive hypoglycemia. This has been a problem for me since WLS. Even if I have a high protein meal. Definitely it is especially bad if I have more carbs. We are all supposed to be doing a protein-forward diet, but when I have carbs, which is more now than right after WLS, I try to balance the carbs with protein and fat. For me, fat is sometimes more important than the protein for in seeking this balance.

in any case, hypoglycemia and reactive hypoglycemia are common issues for many of us after WLS. Definitely consult a doctor for help. It will help the doctor if you have a few days of food tracking to show to her/him. Especially important is to have times written down, and the times of your episodes.

hypoglycemia. Seriously, call Bayer or onetouch or freestyle and they will send you a meter and lancet and sticking device for FREE.

They dont make their money on their meters. They make it on those expensive test strips.
