I always get a flu shot. You are quite a way out from surgery. You should be fine. I asked my surgeon at about 2 weeks before (can't remember exactly) and he told me to wait until after. So, to be on the safe side, you might want to check with your surgeon's office.

Get the flu shot. The flu is already showing up and it is predicted to be a bad year. I just had plastics and got mine ( from my PS) a week before surgery. The shot will NOT make you sick, unless you are allergic to eggs. If you are, tell your doctor. There are other options.

I just had my pre-op for shoulder surgery today and they suggested I get the flu shot before surgery. My surgery is just shy of two weeks away.

When you say "ask my doctor" are you referring to your surgeon or your PCP? I say ask your surgeon, he's the one who should be determining what you are doing right before surgery.

Ask your surgeon. I forget what mine said, but he did not want me taking a vaccine within a certain time. If forget if it was 30 or 90 days before or after surgery.

Three years ago I got a cold 2 weeks after I had the flu shot. But, it could have been coincidence. But, then last year I got really sick after the flu shot. I probably won't do it this year. I was out for 2 weeks.

The flu shot does not make you sick. A small percentage of people have mild systemic symptoms for a couple of days after a flu shot because the immune system is ramping up in response to the shot. It's an immune reaction, and it does not last more than a couple of days unless you have some sort of immune system compromise.

It is more likely that you were infected by something right around the time you got the shot, either the flu or another respiratory illness. It takes about 2 weeks to ramp up the immunity after the vaccine. The incubation period of most flu virii is about 4 days.

That it happened about the same time as the vaccine does not mean the vaccine is the culprit.

The common cold is not the flu so that wasn't related to or caused by the flu shot. What often happens is people get flu shots right when the flu i****ting their community so their immune system doesn't have time to develop antibodies prior to exposure. One way to minimize this is to get the flu shot earlier (Oct) rather than later (Nov-Dec).
