which surgery?
They're both very safe and have similar results over time. Factors to consider mainly involve your health history - do you have a history of reflux or GERD? What other health concerns do you have? These are things to discuss with your current medical team.

It depends on many things. I was open to either but preferred the thought of the sleeve going into it but discussed both at length with my surgeon.
We decided for me that the sleeve was the best choice. When I first saw my surgeon on May 11, 2016, I was 5'3" and 271.5 pounds. I have asthma, reflux (which I didn't know at the time) and severe osteoarthritis in my knees (as in used to take narcotics for pain - almost daily). I was 55.
I just had my 1 year anniversary visit - I have been asked to speak to the support groups for new folks because I've done so well. I'm down 102 pounds from a size 24 (barely) to a size 8 pants. I fence (en garde!) 4-5 hours a week and competed in my first tournament today. I think I will be able to put off having my knees replaced.
One of the factors for me was that I need to take something daily to help with the knee pain. While neither surgery allows for long-term use of NSAIDs, we decided on a Cox-II inhibitor (same class of drug as Celebrex) that both my ortho and my gastirc surgeon could agree on.
So, talk with your doc - s/he may have specific reasons for one versus the other.
Oh - and by the way - I'm still losing. I want to drop another 20 before I declare myself at goal! I'm 13 months out.
Keep on losing!

VSG 2013, RNY conversion 2019 due to GERD. Trendweight here!
I have a higher BMI than some and chose the VSG due to fewer long-term complications i.e. vitamin deficiencies/malabsorption. Seems to be a slightly safer surgery with very good results. I can't go in this thinking surgery is going to do everything, and eventually we will be able to tolerate food better and will gain on both if not careful. My Mom is team RNY and has done awesome with no major complications. Article on the homepage was very helpful.

My doctor said the same thing. I take medication for bipolar disorder, and chose the VSG (with surgeon's suggestion) because I didn't want to risk any malabsorption of my psych meds.

I had gotten to a point in my life where no matter if I was perfect on my restriction i.e. Diet I still didn't lose significant weight. So I wasn't confident a restriction only procedure would be enough,
