Vitamin D

I found out my vitamin D is at 25nmol/L, and I need to get it between 75-250nmol/L in the next 8 weeks. My dietitan told me to have 7000ui of vitamin D. Anyone else have this problem? How long did it take to get your vitamin D up?

I have chronically low D and have to take supplements. I wasn't getting much bang with the supplements I was taking, and someone here recommended switching to "dry" D3. I now take this, and my levels are decent for the first time in years:

I'm sure there are others that are also good.

Good luck!!

Walmart carries dry D now, so you shouldn't have to look too hard. Here in the US it doesn't require a prescription in dry form, and I can even get 50,000iu at the pharmacy counter. They keep it in the back, so don't hesitate to ask them what they can get for you. I know they keep up to 1000iu on the shelves for everyone.

I was on prescription vitamin D (pre-surgery) for a few weeks (maybe 4 or 6 weeks? Can't remember), then I went on a daily OTC version. My OTC is sublingual (manufacturer is Superior Source). Both worked great - my Vitamin D level has been normal for a couple of years now.

Been on Vit D for about 5 years - if I don't supplement, I get dangerously low. It took about a month to get my level up with what my doc recommended. Best of luck.

As a DSer I take only dry vitamins, especially D3. If you can't get it through Amazon (because you're in Canada), try some local stores. I've seen dry or sublingual Vit D3 in places like Whole Foods or other stores that have good vitamin sections. If not talk to your pharmacist to see if they can special order Dry D3.

Just make sure it's dry, and D3, not D2. We can get capsules of 50,000 a bunch of places down here, but I'm not sure what's in Canada.

Some here take 50,000 per day to keep their levels up. If you need to raise yours quickly, you don't need to be too cautious. Most doctors and nutritionists will only tell you to take 2,000 per day. It takes a long time to build levels up at that dosage -- if it builds them up at all.

I had very low Vitamin D tested 8 weeks before surgery. We are required to take 5000 iu at my program and they had me double that for 3 months. I just had my 6 months check up yesterday and they said my D level is great (can't remember what it is and I have to get a copy from my PCP).
