Major Change in Sleep Habits

Has anyone had major changes to their sleep habits since surgery? I've always been a sleeper. Of course, as a teenager, I slept until noon any day I could. But, that continued into adulthood to some degree (where noon became 9am). Before surgery, I always looked forward to weekends because I'd get to sleep in.

Now, I pop out of bed at 5am. I also wake up several times overnight anticipating whether it's time to get up yet. Strangely, my bedtime hasn't changed and I fall asleep easily and even back to sleep easily after wake-ups, though I feel let down when I see it's only 1 or 2am. It's like I'm constantly a kid waiting for something exciting the next day.

I don't feel tired during the day. You know all those memes people post about how as an adult you can always say you're tired? Well, I'm not.

I work out 6+ times per week. Is this a marker of health? Of the fact that this is the first time in 20 years I haven't been fighting diabetes? Of insanity? lol. Maybe I'm just finally living up to my genetics and should become a farmer?

I have found that being a hundred plus pounds overweight is not conducive to good sleep. Also there is the depression from being overweight. I'm not surprised that your sleep habits changed.

Although I'm not tired, I feel like my sleep is worse now than it was post-op. I don't feel poorly at all, but I tend to not want to go to bed (I do anyway, I'm pretty strict about a 10pm bedtime unless I have some valid reason to stay up), because I'm anticipating I will wake several times in the night.

I have never been a good sleeper and it got worse after surgery. No idea why. I also wake up SEVERAL times a night, again no idea why.

I had started to take OTC sleeping pills and they worked for a while then stopped working and I am back to waking up all the time during the night.

I wake up at 4:45am weekdays for work and on weekends I usually wake up at 5am and roll over and force myself back to sleep and lately I am up at 7am on weekends and I hate it, I love sleep but sleep does not love me.

Sorry I have no answers for you but wanted you to know you are not alone.

Were you tested for sleep apnea prior to surgery? I wonder if you might have had a mild case of it prior to weight loss which caused you to need more sleep due to overall poor quality of sleep. Now that you've lost weight, you might have also lost the apnea, so your sleep quality is higher and you need less of it.

I also feel that, for me, being SMO was... exhausting. Just pervasively tiring. While my new lifestyle is active and busy, it's not the same at all as that perpetual exhaustion I experienced due to existing while fat.

So.. those are my thoughts.

Yes, they required me to have a sleep study because I took some quiz and scored above the "at risk" level. The sleep study came back negative for sleep apnea. I will say though, I slept very, very little that night with all the stuff stuck to me.

Yeah... I don't see how sleep studies can be useful to determine "normal" sleep habits at all! Art recently had to go through a retest for his apnea and got to use a device at home. It seemed much more useful.

My sleeping patterns have definitely changed since surgery...

While I'm tired at night, and I fall asleep easily, I'm often waking up and looking at the clock several times a night. I too was the teen/young adult that would sleep until 1pm on the weekends! Now I am lucky if I can get past 7am on the weekends. I get up at 5:15 during the week.

I don't like it one bit, but there's nothing I can seem to do about it. Ugh.

I'm the same way. I'd written it off to getting older, but I suppose it could be due to WLS - now I'm not sure!

You described my sleeping habits to a T. But for me it was the same before surgery. I'm always up bright eyed and bushy tailed way early, no alarm needed- and am rarely ever tired. I can not stay up late though- I'm no night owl. I'm a definite, energetic early bird however. Always have been.

A lady who works for me is constantly complaining of being tired, drained etc. it's tiring to hear cause I can't relate.

We can start our own farm commune.
