Dr. Prescribed Orlistat for weight gain after RNY--help!

I am 11 years out, have gained 20ish pounds. My surgeon told me to quit eating sugar, which I did in May. Zero loss. I came here for advice. It was suggested I cut all carbs which turn to sugar and log my eating, which I have done. After 11 days of less than 1000 calories a day, Imhave gained a pound. I wrote my doc, and he said maybe I had put my body in starvation mode (seems nuts to me since I ate way less calories for months after surgery) and he was prescribing Orlista for a month. After that if no results, he can do the ROSE or POSE--with the understand that it won't last forver. I am soooo depressed! Has anyone else had these problems, and had the doc prescribe Orlistat or Alli for them? Did it help? I am well aware of the side effects.

There is no such thing as starvation mode.

11 days on a reduced calorie diet isn't nearly enough time to make any judgments. A lot of things can affect your weight in that short of time period-- water weight, your monthly cycle, or other fluctuations. If you did 1000 calories/day for two months and gained weight, then there'd be a problem, but it's too quick to jump to that conclusion.

Are you 100% sure you're eating 1000 calories? Are you weighing and measuring everything that goes into your mouth? Portion creep is a real phenomenon, and can cause our logging to be inaccurate.

Ab.so.lute.ly. Sure. Note I cut out all sugar in May, too!

A year ago you posted you were up 30-35 pounds. So is this 20 in addition to that or are you down 15 in the last year? If you are down 15, that is great news.

Personally I would not have surgery for 20 pounds. Surgery is dangerous. Any surgery.

Have you tried cutting back to 800 calories a day and restricting carbs to under 40?

Some people maintain on 1000-1200 calories a day.

My low weight was 145. I maintained at 150 for many years. I went as high as 178.9 on Oct 16 last year. I was 171 in May. I am now 167/8. Yes, have cut back to the calories and carb levels you stated; for 11 days. Before that I cut all added sugar (but not fresh fruit) since May when I initially went to doc. So, yes I'm down ten pounds from my all time post surgery high, but have not lost any weight (or basically three pounds since May) after first cutting sugar, then the more drastic measures 11 days ago.

Have patience. It may take more than 11 days for things to change.

fresh fruit IS sugar. Your body doesn't know the difference between fruit sugar and table sugar.

Mad long as you give your body fruit sugar, it will use that for energy and not burn your stored fat for energy. Burning stored fat causes weight loss.

Give up all fruit and eat meat, eggs and cheese, very few non carbs vegetables and 800 cals and you will likely lose.

You probably won't lose by eating fruit, not even with a weight loss shot.

I already DID give up fruit, just not in May--11 days ago.

11 days is not really a long time. I often go 2 weeks without losing a lb even when I limit my calories.

A lot of time as we lose weight- lose fat - our body fill the fat cells with water... holds to it, and then may let go if we are persistent with low carb- lower calorie diet.
