Abdominal apron and loose skin

Hi everyone, I have a question for those of you who have been losing weight and have or have had loose skin. My start weight was 226, and I'm down to 197. I have another 60-70 pounds to go and am worried about my apron. Right now, it's not too bad but I'm afraid it's going to get worse. Does anyone have any experience losing around 80-90 pounds and needing their apron removed? Any advice? I haven't had surgery and am losing the weight at about 1-1.5 lbs a week. I'm hoping if I go slow my skin will bounce back and I will be able to avoid surgery. Thank you in advance.

Honestly , you read my mind when posting this.

I am pre-surgery until Friday that is, and I'm wondering about loose skin after my weight loss also. I hope to lose around 100-120 and not have a bunch of skin hanging off me.

The vets will be able to answer you question.

Good luck with your weight loss journey.

Please don't try to slow your loss. It will NOT effect how much excess skin you have. And it may very well prevent you from reaching goal.

How well your skin bounces back depends on genetics, age, and how long you were obese. Two identically sized people can have very different experiences.

Get the weight off. Trust me, you'll look much better without all that extra fat, regardless of your skin.

Also, there is no cream or lotion that will help. You may end up with shinier and smoother skin, but it won't be any smaller.

As Grim said, the speed of your weight loss won't make any difference WRT loose skin. Some people win the genetic lottery and everything snaps back into place, but most of us aren't that lucky. One thing I would definitely do is work with your doctor and document any problem that arises from the loose skin. Rashes, infections--anything. It's very hard to get insurance to pay for skin removal surgery since it's viewed as an elective cosmetic procedure rather than a necessary quality of life procedure.

Keep going with your weight loss and document everything!

I agree with both Jen and Grimm. It's all going to fall to genetics and age. I have a friend who lost 130 pounds and doesn't have an apron. I lost the same and had an apron. I carried a lot of my weight in my abdomen, while she carried more of her weight in her legs and thighs. She has wider hips than mine.

But regardless, having an apron is way better than being morbidly obese.

That said, I had a tummy tuck and breast lift about 3 months ago and I'm very happy with the results.

Also makes a difference how you currently carry your weight. If you already have a large apron now, you're pretty much screwed. I lost 260+ lbs and have no apron but I never had one hanging when I was heavy. Losing slow has no bearing on skin

Loose skin is a crap shot. If you're young and haven't been MO for a super long time, it might tighten on its own. But if you're older, or if your skin is very damaged, it'll never bounce back. Losing weight slowly or quickly has ZERO impact on this.

So far I've lost almost 150 lbs total. 35+ before surgery and the rest since. I'm 47 and am just a couple of weeks beyond my one year surgiversary. Fortunately, I have no apron. An "almost" fold over each front hip area, but with support underwear, no one notices. I actually get questions about how my tummy is so flat after such a significant weight loss. Good genetics! Unfortunately, my breasts have not fared so well. I've joked that for my 50th birthday, I will be purchasing a new pair - and my husband agrees (lol)!!
