You must be early in your journey? Meat and cheese are fine (and great) once you are on solids.

White/red potatoes are bad. They are bad carbs, and they are mushy so you wont remain satisfied because blood sugar spiking and lack of density.

I eat baked mashed up sweet potato in small quantities WHILE running in half marathon training. They are baked no extra sugar. The sweet potato and other forms of baby food are my replacements for energy gels. When i am done with my work out (like in excess of 8 miles) I am done with the carbs.

SOME people can tolerate white potatoes, and CHOOSE to include them, in their meal plans. I, personally, do not. normally.

Should I choose to, it wouldn't be the death of me, but I would PLAN for it, and include it in my daily TOTALS. If UN-planned, I would probably run amuck...BTDT

BUT...I am 15 YEARS post op..and under goal

potatoes are definitely a trigger food for me. I LOVE potatoes. I try to avoid them, and very rarely make them for my family. I do have them occasionally, but when I do, I do it in moderation. I can't make mashed potatoes, ever, but a bit of roasted potatoes, or sometimes in a stew is yummy.

I'm 2 years out from surgery and within 10 pounds of goal. I would probably be at goal if I never let them back into my diet, but that is not how I roll.

-Me too. I can't have them in the house, but I live alone so it is easier for me to control the environment.

Potatoes, along with grains, particularly wheat, are to today's low carb diets what eggs and butter were to yesterday's low fat fad diets - nutritionally useful in moderation but problematic in excess (just like many foods!) Potatoes are about the most calorically efficient real food source of potassium, which don't usually get enough of, particularly when low carb-ing, and isn't included to any useful degree in our supplements. If they trigger cravings in you that cause you to overeat, then avoid them and adjust your diet nutritionally appropriately. Otherwise, they have a legitimate place in a normally balanced diet. The same goes for other common trigger foods such as nuts and cheeses that are encouraged in today's low carb mania. If they don't bother you, don't worry about what bothers other people, as there will always be someone who objects to what you do.

I make potatoes for my family and will eat them once in a blue moon if they're incorporated in a dish, but they're definitely a sometimes food for me - maybe once a month. And less than an ounce.

Interesting thread. Since this forum is for all weight loss surgeries, I wanted to interject. I'm 14+ years post-op with the DS. I treat potatoes as a "good carb". But there really isn't anything I don't eat - I just limit quantities and focus on protein first.

Actually had a handful of fries with my dinner last night (roasted chicken).
