Protein Supplement AFTER surgery?
Hey everyone,
I'm still months away from surgery (RNY) but I wanted to know what everyone's favourite protein powder/supplement was after surgery.
My doctor said I would have to find one I like after surgery. He recommended Premier Protein, but said anything is fine as long as it has 20-35g of protein per serving, under 6g carbs, and under 3g fat.
I'm in Canada, if that helps any. I'm looking for something that's easy to find (Amazon, Walmart, etc).
(also let me know which ones taste terrible!)
Referral: June 2017
RNY with Dr. Neville in Ottawa: January 8th, 2018
I like the premier ones, especially the caramel, and I like the quest peanut butter and cookies n cream. I'm only 3 weeks out so I haven't had time to try a ton of different kinds. I also liked the Jay Robb chocolate with a little sugar free pumpkin flavored syrup in it.
Everyone will say that your taste may change after surgery, lucky for me mine didn't. At least not in the protein shake department.
I didn't like the quest salted caramel which surprised me.

Individual tastes in protein powders vary a LOT. For example, I know tons of people who rave about Premier Protein, but I've never been able to gag down any sort of chocolate protein. I do much better with the Syntrax Nectar, which others find totally disgusting.
Your best bet is to find small tubs or sample packs of a bunch of different types. Whey, soy, chocolate, fruit, snag a bunch. Then you can try them right after your surgery and order more of whichever you like best.

I feel the same way about Premier Protein. Sometimes I feel like I must be the only one! It certainly didn't help that I got a few cases when they were having that issue with curdling :/

I got samples of different chocolate and vanilla powders at the local vitamin store. I ordered the fruit stuff from this website.

First, remember that your tastes may change significantly after surgery, so what you love before, may be something you hate after. Getting some small samples to try after surgery is a great idea, otherwise you could be out a lot of money for something you hate!
I never did like any of the premade shakes I tasted. I preferred to mix my own.
I made my own shakes using Isopure Zero Carb Unflavored protein powder (also have used Syntrax Nectar Unflavored). Head to the grocery store and get some liquid flavorings and cocoa powder and PB2 dry peanut butter. Here are some of the combinations I made using unflavored protein powder and skim milk (almond milk also works):
Almond Joy = coconut + almond + cocoa
Mounds = same as above without the almond
Pina Colada = pineapple + coconut
Tropical Delight = banana + pineapple + coconut
Chocolate Mint = cocoa + peppermint
Banana Creme: banana + a touch of vanilla
Lemon Meringue = lemon + a touch of vanilla
Reese's = cocoa powder + PB2 (mix in a little water first)
Elvis Presley = PB2 + banana (get it, his fried PB and banana sandwiches? lol)
Depending on what flavorings you can get, the sky is the limit!
