Weighing Food: 1-oz-by-weight VS. Megalodon...I mean VS. 1-oz-by-volume

Yes, it's the chicken/egg analogy--or rather the 1 ounce of feathers/1 ounce of cannonball question. I let my fingers do the walking in the SEARCH feature of OH and read some pretty "weighty" stuff. But of course, it's in my nature to ask more questions.

Background:
My surgeon's instructions discuss eating 2tbsp of food in the beginning phases of food introduction post surgery. They do not discuss weights such as, "Though shalt not consume any more, nor any less, than 2 ounces of protein at one time..." Nor anything to that effect. So how do you make sure you don't overeat and stretch out your pouch?

2tbsp=1 ounce pill cup from the hospital=1/8 cup by volume.

4tbsp=2 ounce condiment cup from many restaurants=1/4 cup by volume=1 ounce by weight of some meats such as ground beef, shredded chicken, shredded pork/beef, shredded cheddar/hard cheese.

Question:
For those of you who weigh their protein and ingredients via digital scale, do you ignore this volumetric conversion from weight, or did/do you take it into consideration? The reason I ask is that I'm in a long-term relationship with my digital scale and its tare button. So when the surgeon tells me, you can have this pill cup of ground turkey, enjoy. Do I ACTUALLY need to measure with the pill cup, or can I slap a saucer on my trusty scale and weigh out 1 ounce and count it as 1ounce of protein?

TIA, I'm sure I'm over-thinkin' this stuff--it's how I roll.

My meal size now is 2 ounces, and I weigh everything out in ounces on my scale. When I was first starting to have pureed food, though, I bought myself clear plastic 1-oz. shot glasses and just put my cottage cheese/hummus meals into them. I didn't weigh my food until I graduated from that phase and began eating things like deli meat and cheese, which couldn't easily be measured in those tiny cups.

My way of doing it (recognizing that there's more than one way to skin a cat)...

I eat 95% dense protein. I put meat, cheese, etc in this category. Therefore, I measure everything by weight -- I actually use grams for the most accuracy -- on a food scale.

Sliders -- anything that requires a cup/bowl -- I measure by volume/cup/ounces.

In fact, this has been instrumental to my differentiating between what I should be eating and what is questionable... because in theory, we should be avoiding slider foods, if possible.

Ok, so see? This is how I would prefer to approach things. I measure in grams and tare the crap outta the scale until I've made my meal. Then I sit my arse in the chair and savor every last morsel (sometimes licking the plate--heh). Whah? Like you've never licked the plate? (That's a "royal" you, Kat!) And I simply refuse to go back for a second round cuz it would lead to the path of perdition...

BUT, what about when the surgeon says 2tbsp? With protein, rather than with liquid measures, 2 tbsp. may have different weights depending on the protein. With liquid measure, 2tbsp=1 fluid ounce. And if I weigh out 1 ounce of ground beef or turkey, that will be more like 4 tbsp, rather than the 2 tbsp. So is the whole "weighing on a scale" gig for later on down the highway after you graduate past the slider phase? TIA!

For me, those volume requirements were only in the eating phases where it was easy. So.. 2 tablespoons of pureed meat. Or of soft things that were easy to smoosh into a 2-ounce pill cup (or whatever I was using). Once I got to dense foods switching to weight only was easy.

During the healing phase, everything was by volume. Now I do everything by weight.

This is me... I use my digital scale, and unlike Kat, I use the ounces, but they do go to the .10 so that helps (I can't convert with grams easily, and it hurts my head)

(snort!) I heard they (grams) are crunchy little bastages that used to taste great with a toasted marshmallow and a piece of dark chocolate squished between them!
