Sushi-Not the health food I thought
So the cafeteria here just started rolling fresh sushi for us. It is more spendy than at my H Mart but sometimes one wants to have sushi for lunch.
Aside from the carbs from the rice, I have always pictured sushi as this pristine health food that is low in calories. When I look at the majority of people eating su****hey seem slim to normal in size.
So this new stand in the cafeteria lists the calorie content with each roll. I almost fell over. Most of the rolls were between 600-900 calories for just 8 pieces. Like what are they putting in them? Potato chips!?!?! Actually it was cream cheese, avocado and spicy mayo. But my beloved philadephia roll (salmon and cream cheese was well into the 600 range).
The more traditional rolls (like the california, vegetable and something boring roll) managed to keep it into the 200-300 calorie range.
But the amount of calories in those 8 little pieces was eye opening. They were mini-calorie gernades

I don't think of those kinds of "sushi" as actual sushi, but as fast-food. Raw fish is sushi.
Yup, we all should read the labels. Investigate the ingredients.
Good on you! :)

Sushi is a calorie nightmare however... Sashimi is your new best friend! Skip the rice the sauces the mayo... go with just slices of delicious raw tuna, salmon, more tuna... I started eating Sashimi the second week when my NUT cleared me for mushy foods... I minced it up real well and it slid right down and OMG the protein profile is beautiful!
Now I treat myself to 4 to 6 oz of sashimi at least once a week. I love all the tuna types and salmon.
Good luck!

If you ask nicely, a sushi chef can do what I call low-carb nigiri. Instead of putting raw fish on a rice ball, they can put it on top of cucumber matchsticks. The crunch from the kyuuri is very tasty!

Must try this! As much as a foodie I would like to imagine myself to be, just plain old raw meat (sashimi) makes my gullet close.
It is a mental block. Somehow, the rice, kelp, cucumber make it "not raw" to my brain.

I need to take a picture of this so the next time I am out with friends I can remember what to order!
Brilliant!
I do love sashimi... but I think it's more the wasabi/ginger/soy that I crave.
