The struggle is real....I had yet another slip up tonight. I am in the pre-op stage and have been tracking food since June 8th. Tonight I binged. I'm very disappointed in myself. I feel guilt, shame and just plain sick. I will get back on track tomorrow. I am worried this is what I'll do forever. That's why I'm praying this tool will help me with my cravings and extra help to not give in. I do realise the VSG is not a miracle pill so to speak. I also know in my heart it will be the help I need to overcome this. I am curious if any of u struggle with binging after the surgery. I'm keepingy my head up and choosing to be healthy and fight the binges.

Sadly the surgery doesn't fix our brains, just our tummies. For me to deal with my emotional eating and binge urges I turned to therapy. It was embarrassing at first, to admit that I couldn't cope without food, but ultimately I am in a MUCH better place now and I'm a huge fan of having someone to talk to (in a professional capacity) while we navigate this whole WLS adventure.

I am very lucky that I found a therapist that I can connect with. I feel really good about us working together helping me with all my deep seeded issues. I just brought up weight loss surgery last week and working on changing my mindset and my abusive relationship with food.

Exactly- The surgery is only a tool. We have to get our heads in the right place. With that said, you will be limited in how much dense protein you can eat at one time. So if you plan properly and eat dense protein when hungry, the tool works great. Unfortunately bad carbs like crackers, cookies and the like do not cause the same restriction. You may not feel great if you eat a lot but they are called "slider" foods for a reason.

During the pre-op period you get to "practice" the rules without restriction. For the first few months after WLS, you will be forced to eat low calorie while your tummy heals. Hopefully by then you have figured out how to use your new tool and can continue being successful.

you are mistaken. No one is " forced to eat low calorie while their tummy heals".

there has been more than one post about ppl immediately post op stopping for tacos, burgers and all manner of other foods, on their way home from the hospital.

you are doing a misservice by making the op think she will be " forced" to eat on plan when it simply isn't true.

Sorry - Apparently you are correct. I should have said it was the case for me (my tummy wouldn't handle much), not necessarily for everyone.

Great point, Gwen! Ice cream, saltines, chips, cake, popcorn, tortilla chips, etc. are all examples of slider foods. They contain very little nutritional value and are dissolved in water/liquid quickly. Dense protein remains in your stomach longer.

no , no weight loss surgery is not going to help you with cravings or giving in to them. Food addiction is like any other addiction, it can only be managed by going cold turkey. I suggest therapy if you aren't already in it.

you are already thinking, in spite of what you say here, that surgery is going to be a"magic bullet." It isn't and unless you change your mindset about that you are going to be very disappointed.

I wish you well.
