My team's rule is keep any food under 5 grams of sugar with 10 grams at breakfast (per serving). Because I do eat fruit, sometimes I ignore that - particularly if it is a heavy workout day (e.g. today when I did 2 hours of fencing and burned 1100 calories and my daily calorie intake is usually 1000 calories.) I usually put fresh or frozen fruit (no more than 1 cup) in my breakfast shake or if I don't do that, I use that "fruit" allotment during the day as a snack.

Keep on losing!

I think the net carbs philosophy is bunk to make people feel better about what they are eating...

Net carbs is a load of crap. The definition, as others pointed out, is total carbs minus fiber equals net carbs. This assumes that the fiber passes right through and is not absorbed.

But in real life, companies that market net carbs on the label are playing fast and loose with what is actually fiber. If you check the label, I'm willing to bet you will find something like soluble corn fiber or isomalto-oligosaccharides. These are artificial sweeteners, made in a factory, and they do not pass through you without being absorbed. They have the same calories as regular sugar, and will spike your blood sugar just as a candy bar would.

Read the nutrition facts label. They are required to list total carbs. There is no category for net carbs. Net carbs is part of the hype and advertising on other parts of the label, not a nutrition fact.

Count all carbs. And 10 grams of sugar is more than you should be eating in a whole day, much less one meal.

Thank you for all your input. I thought I was doing good by adding in this item when I couldn't reach 1200 baaad idea. I am new to this and was not doing the math right. Trial and error. It's frustrating because I put all my food in my tracker (high protein, low carb) and it still isn't up to 1200 so I have to go back and add more food. Which is odd to me because I am satisfied. The reason why I want to b at 1200 is because I am afraid if I'm not my body will go into starvation mode.

question- why are you trying to eat 1200 calories a day? are you pre or post op and if post op have you reached goal?

If your center wants you eating 1200 then that should be your goal. BUT if you are weighing your food and recording it and under 1200 it is not a problem.

There were many times preop that I just wasn't as hungry so was under my calorie limit. just make sure you are getting the minimum protein in.

NOT REAL.

I am three years out and have maintained a normal BMI and I still DO NOT eat 1200 calories a day.
