There is an article on 3 things to stop regain. Though I like the suggestions what made me say HUH? was the statement "We all know that some weight regain is expected - usually around 25% of the total weight initially lost". I think it is the words "expected" and "usually" that bother me most in that sentence. If it said "on average" I don't think it would bother me as much. "Expected" makes it sound like we have permission to regain that much. I DON'T WANT THAT PERMISSION! How do the rest of you feel?

As a data scientist, those are perfectly reasonable words to describe patterns that doctors and researchers have seen in the patient population.

Good point: I guess we all have to work hard to defy the odds!

It is certainly possible to have zero regain. But we have to stay vigilant, weigh ourselves every day (or just about), and pay close attention to what and how much we eat.

Regain is not a foregone conclusion.

But, human nature being what it is, we do get a little lax after concentrating so hard for a year or two. We go back to some habits that we spent a long time developing -- bad habits. We have stresses with work and family. Stuff happens

I think most people regain a little. Many catch it at 5, 10, or 15 pounds, and take it right off again. Most people seem to gain that much and stay pretty stable after. But, some gain pretty much everything back.

It's all up to us. Nothing is carved in stone. As for that article, it sounds like they are throwing around a lot of generalizations and guesses.

I have no comment on the accuracy of it, but that's a terrifying statistic. I hope I can prove it wrong.

I noticed that as well and momentarily freaked out. I do think that's probably an average. Which means, it doesn't have to happen to you and me as long as we're vigilant. I hope.

A good reminder and motivator to not allow oneself to become a statistic (in a negative way). Or to inspire one to be an exception to the rule. The language of that statement has nagged at me since the beginning of the process, so every time I hear or read it, I resolve in my core to defy the odds. I do appreciate the advice on how to keep the weight from coming back once it is off. For those of us who have lost and gained and lost and gained all of our lives, it is a legitimate fear. The power of resolve to all of us to stay the course!

I don't think it is a definite or a given especially if you are on this board daily. I am 9 years out (may 2008) and was totally great for 7 years. Lost 130 lbs.Followed all the rules. The one thing I didn't do is the support piece here or an outside support group. Came hard for me as none with hospital and a private person for online worried of people from outside reading etc. but not having support, forgetting where I came from put on 40 lbs from my goal in years 7 thru 9. I NEVER thought that would happen to me. Losing a job at the same time as my husband ... both worked for the same company that essentially 99percent down sized and sold off businesses, the comfort of food came back. Lost control. Exercising went out the window. I recently found support and live it now each day and got myself back down 17 lbs since late April, it is taking a lot longer but it is coming off! I have 30 to be back to my goal. Which for me at 50 years old and 5 foot 7 is 140. I think for all of you as long as you stay here daily you will never gain it keeps it all fresh and up front. The one huge thing I can tell you is support here and outside is vital. How I believe I lost touch and in year 7 when sh-t hit fan I went out of control. Life is good now... husband with new company a little over a year and I received a great offer and start July 5. We had a 2 year drama with our financial security with 2 kids but it all worked out and a lesson for me to stay in touch with support. Sorry this is long. Just giving perspective of someone who gained! I don't think it is expected either and vow to stay on my road... feels even more proud getting it back under control. Thanks for all your great posts. You are all helping me!
