How much is too much?

I feel like I'm a slow loser but at 4 months out I had lost 49% of my excess weight according to my centre. They were quite pleased.

RNY Jan 12, 2017 Lost 137 lbs but regained 60.

77 lbs lost and counting!

Losing the regain! I got this!

I lost 100 per cent of my excess weight, 120lbs, in under 6 months. No such thing as losing too fast!

Wow, 120 lbs in 6months is pretty fast! To what do you attribute your success?

Ate clean, followed the rules, didn't try and find substitutes, didn't make excuses.

I really just got on with it. I see a lot of self sabotage on this site and a lot of people who are not really ready psychologically for the changes we need to make. I think being ready and being determined was the key to my quick success.

My center has tougher goals than most. We are told to lose 100% of our excess weight, plus an extra 10, 20 or 30 pounds by the end of year two. That extra weight loss is to allow for bounce back regain.

It is impossible to lose the excess weight too quickly.

Your body will recover from the forced starvation of the surgery and maintaining your loss will then become a lifetime project.

Absolutely no such thing as losing too fast. I lost all of my excess weight by the end of year 1, and over 60 percent of my TOTAL weight. Altogether, 70 pounds below my surgeon's goal for me.

I was very happy the day I hit my surgeon's goal. I would be really unhappy today if I had stopped there -- or even slowed down.

If you want the weight gone, get it gone as fast as you can.

I think it depends on the type of surgery you've had but 60% seems conservative to me. I was at goal by 8 months and well below goal by 16 months (too low IMO). I'm over 9 years out now and need to lose 25'ish pounds to get back to my comfy spot for my frame. You're in the honeymoon phase of your WL journey, embrace it cause it will stabilize and get harder the farther out you are. Congrats on your success so far!

I've lost 94% of my excess weight in 4 1/2 months. My doctor is thrilled with my progress. That goal only gets me to the top of normal BMI, so I plan to lose another 14-18lbs in addition to that goal. An additional 14lbs puts me at "ideal weight" and 18lbs will make me 1/2 the person I was!

As long as you're not underweight, you can't really lose weight too quickly. Take advantage of this post-op time when your motivation is high!

I've also found that most people are told a bogus "excess weight" number. Excess weight is NOT the weight you need to lose to reach an arbitrary goal you've set. Excess weight is the weight you have that's on top of your "ideal weight." Ideal weight does not equal goal weight, or a "normal" BMI, at least not for everyone.

There are a number of ideal weight calculators online that can be used to get an idea for where your actual ideal weight is. For some people, losing 60% of excess weight might be their goal. For others, losing 100% is their goal.

The 60% within a year is an average, everyone is different. Also remember many folks lose a great deal quickly then can stall for months at a time. No worries. Just make sure you are getting your nutrition. I don't think losing too much is a real concern anyway, at least from the research I have seen. Good luck and enjoy your journey.
