I have to admit, in my early years I loved the long weekend. Being able to get together with family and yes it was all about the food. LOVE BBQ and all the fixings But as I get older Memorial Day weekend has taken on a new meaning for me.

We live in a world where little girls are getting blow up just because they were doing what little girls do. No matter what your politics or beliefs are, please take a moment to say thank you to those that have spilled their blood for us....

I have had many men in my family in the military. Some made it home, and some did not. They are all on my mind, especially on Memorial Day.

This year Memorial Day is very special as we welcome back to the states my step-son Matt. He has been on active duty in Europe the past 4 years and did 2 tours in Afghanistan before that.

Thank you to all who protect our country and the lives of those in harms way. Past, Present and Future.

In the early part, of my nursing career...when I was young...we are talking decades ago...I worked most all the holidays. Memorial Day was a big deal back then, as I was usually working in long term care (nursing home), and there were lots of WW2 vets, as well as some Vietnam era vets, etc. We made a BIG deal of honoring them--as it SHOULD be...

After I had my boys, they went to work with me, on these holidays, and joined the celebrations. If not at work, we would go to the local cemetary and put flags on the graves, of vets, who didn't already have a flag.

As the years have passed, I am ashamed to say I have gotten away from my traditions. I do believe I will be purchasing some flags, and taking myself to the cemetary, on Monday!!

I use to do the flags too. I had gone to JoAnn's and bought the little ones and lined my property. The entire neighborhood use to do it. Sadly I too had not continued to do so. It looked so pretty when everyone did. Enjoy your weekend Gina!

We try to go to a Memorial Day Parade. It brings tears to my eyes. I also remember my dad's funeral where they did the gun salute and broght the flag to my mom. My mom joined my dad in 2008. I sometimes look at my young 3 & 5 year old grandkids and worry about them having to serve in active duty. I retired from a large distribution center of the U.S. Postal Service. There were about 1200 employees We had many veterans. They were very upset when the light burned out that shines on the flag and the maintence department did not replace the bulb. They fought for their country and having the flag up at night without a light was a disgrace.

Thank you to all the vets and family members of vets for protecting our country.
