How much should I be losing
it's pointless to compare yourself to others because everyone loses at different rates depending on a lot of different factors. From what I can tell from being on this board for a few years and noticing people's signature lines, a "normal" range of loss for the first month is about 15-25 lbs. But there are people who lose more or less than that, of course. You're probably trying to compare yourself to people who drop 30 lbs the first month, but those people are the exception.
if it makes you feel any better, I started off at close to 400 lbs and "only" lost 16 lbs the first month. I ended up losing over 230 lbs and am in a normal BMI range. Your commitment to your program is going to have a MUCH greater impact on your success than your rate of weight loss. Plus if you've lost 15 lbs in the first week, you're losing it way faster than I did...
Well according to the doctor I'm supposed to lose 10 pounds a month. But because of my higher BMI I'll lose a lot more in the beginning they said. So I think you're right on track. It just stinks because I want to wake up skinny already lol. I just wanted to know what others experiences are with the first month. Some people lose like 50 lbs I was hoping I would be one of those people. Plus the past 3 days the scale has stayed the same and it's freaking me out.
the only place I've ever heard of anyone losing 50 lbs is on "My 600 lb Life", and those people start out WAY higher than most of us. The highest I ever hear on the internet forums I've been on is c. 30 lbs, and those people are few and far between. Several of us have lost over 200 lbs and never lost 30 lbs the first month - or any month.
And most of them still lose in the 30 pound range and that is when them being monitored in the hospital.
People seriously think they are going to drop like 75 pounds in 3 months it is mind bobbling.

"My 600 lb Life" does give people some skewed ideas - mostly because the patients they feature are way heavier than most WLS patients. I was with a cousin a couple of weeks ago and spent a lot of time explaining to him how it really is, because the only exposure he's ever had to this whole thing is "My 600 lb Life".
That and people that are super responders to surgery stand out a lot on forums and groups when they talk about their weight loss, so that is what people remember, and that is what they want.
I mean I had 85% of my stomach cut away, I would have liked to lose 30 pounds in a month too, but realistically losing weight fast is hell on your body. I had to learn that the really hard way.
