Breakfast Timing?

I read a few things recently which recommended having breakfast within an hour of getting up to "jump-start" metabolism. I get up REALLY early (4:30-5:30 am depending on the day). I do have coffee and creamer first thing, but usually don't eat breakfast until 8. I'm not really hungry until then and that works best for me in terms of convenience if I'm going into the office and also to keep from getting hungry prior to lunch.

I've always been sort of a proponent of paying attention to when you are truly hungry. From the time DS was born he didn't like to eat much in the morning, but his appetite ramped up during the day, eating a decent lunch and a large dinner. As a baby, there was no way to force him to eat more early in the day and now he rarely eats breakfast (eats similar ratios as when a baby). He has not suffered from weight issues for the most part.

Do you think I should be eating at 5:30-6:30?

I've not heard that it jump starts your metabolism. I'm up early too (about 4:30/5) but don't eat till 6:30 or later. I take my thyroid med at waking and it's supposed to be on an empty stomach- so eating right after would be counterproductive in my head. I still never feel hungry- so I just make sure I drink liquids up until when I eat breakfast.

A trainer once told me 'never hungry, never full' so if you follow that guideline waiting for hunger should probably be avoided.

I also drink lots of liquids in the morning. I think I am very thirsty in the morning after sleeping. I'm really not hungry until 8 - it is almost 7:30 now and I'm not hungry at all yet.

I'm also an early riser, I'm usually up by 5, I don't eat until around 8 too.

My clinic is big on eating within an hour of waking, but for them, it has more to do with regulating blood sugar than anything.

Unless there is a medical reason, like blood sugar, study after study has shown that timing of food is not important at all. Breakfast is NOT the most important meal of the day. Eat after 8 at night if you want. As long as you are getting proper nutrition in the course of a day, don't worry about it.

I find I need to alter my plan every 12 to 18 months. Right now, I eat first thing. For another stretch, I was eating too much in the course of a day, so I waited until 11 am to eat. The first hour in the morning I had some hunger pangs, but they disappeared after that until meal time.

Many vets wait until later to eat, and they function much better doing so. If you are successful -- and happy -- on your current plan, keep following it. Just be prepared to change it if it stops working as well.

Nope. I think you should eat breakfast when you're ready to eat breakfast.

I 16:8 fast and don't have my first meal until noon and stop eating at 8.

I drink a lot of fluids in the morning.

My metabolism is normal to high for a woman of my age. I have it tested regularly.

I think eating when you are not hungry would be a bad idea.

Do you think I should be eating at 5:30-6:30?

Simple answer - "nope". I believe that my body needs a break from eating. That works surprisingly well for me. For maintaining my weight loss as well as helping with my IBS and limiting SIBO.

I often don't eat until 11 or noon. I try to have a "fasting" window of 14-16 hours in every 24 hours time. I often eat late at night, like 8 or 9 pm, and that helped to maintain my BS during the night. But... The food that stays in my small intestine overnight is a perfect condition to cause bacterial overgrowth in small intestine (SIBO). Not good. To limit that I then try to allow "flush," my small intestine with non caloric liquids when am awake: 6 am - till 11 or noon. That really helps dealing with gut motility, constipation, and overall bloating.

My gas and gas pain used to be horrible... Now- only when I do something I know I should not do/eat I would get that. Btw: if I try y ok eat too early for me - I often end up in pain and cramps. Or nausea. So not worth it.

Some people stop eating at 6 pm, them start breakfast at 8 or 9... They naturally doing "intermittent fasting".

As long as you are getting enough nutrition, proteins during the day - and feel good about your food choices and your weight - do what is working for you.

I always have a half of my premier protein when I get up before I hit the gym at 6:30am. This gives me a little boost and I don't eat my breakfast until around 10:30

I had to take a diabetic class before WLS. They encouraged people to eat within 1 hour of waking. I don't like to eat early, but when I do, I find I eat more all day long. So, I do the coffee with Premier Protein shakes, probably 1/2 shake in 2 coffees and that holds me. I probably drink about 4 coffees a day using 1 shake. On work days, I usually don't eat until lunch. I do have 4 meals a day. I am working on stopping the last one, the endless, mindless eating at night.

I don't really want to lose any more weight unless I decide on plastics. I am so wrinkly and the dexa scan tech told me I should not lose any more weight. I get full on 1 egg or 3 ozs of protein so I am trying to find ways to make my grazing more like meals, yet eat enough without losing weight. I am trying to replace pretzels with more salad.

Everyday is a learning experience.
