Need Help to make up my mind on Bypass vs Sleeve

So today was my second visit to my bariatric surgeons office and he mentioned to me to also consider the sleeve, although he told me last month that the bypass is his recomendation...not sure how to feel about it. I know everyone tells me to read, read, and read but I already had decided (because he recomended) to do the bypass. Any thoughts? and what should I read to compare the two?

Are you diabetic or pre-diabetic?

Do you have issues with reflux?

VSG is likely not a good idea for you. RNY would do a better job of resolving your health issues.

I TOTALLY get it. I'm in the same situation. I do not suffer from acid reflux and I'm not yet fully diabetic. My surgeon is leaving it up to me. But today I had an epiphany of sorts. The bypass has a larger weight loss average than sleeve. And a better chance of reversing diabetes. So why not chose the BEST tool for my success? Why would I close something to drastic if it might only take me 75% to my goals? I want to go ALL THE WAY and have the best possible chance for success and avoidance of diabetes. I chose Roux-en-y (aka gastric bypass)

very good point....Its exactly why I chose it too, but when he said "Sleeve maybe something to consider" I was like, wait what???

If you have acid reflux, I would do the bypass. I had bad acid and my doctor said I would be worse with the sleeve. So glad I chose the bypass. I have a friend who did the sleeve, and because she can eat anything, she does. She is only down about 25 lbs in almost a year. I'm down 70 lbs in 8 months, and 2 lbs from my goad of 125. I passed my doctors goal for me of 140 lbs a couple of months ago.

Good luck with your decision

Wow... I could have written this! my situation was EXACTLY the same and so is my weight loss. I just did not have a choice as to what surgery I could have my surgeon said that RNY was the only way he would go with all of my other issues. I also had Barretts esophagus and the sleeve would not have helped that.

My surgeon also gave me the choice. I had GERD, but also had a hiatel hernia which they were going to correct during surgery. I was pre-diabetic. I chose the VSG because I felt more comfortable having the surgery just be changing my stomach and not my intestines. But I did have some angst over it and questioned what to do several times pre-op.

So far it has worked great for me - I lost weight as fast as most with RNY. I have no GERD right now.

You just have to read the pros and cons of each and go with your gut somewhat.
