Strange neurological symptoms almost 1 year post-op.

I haven't been here for awhile but have been doing well with my weight loss. I had VSG on June 28th last year. I have lost 112 lbs so far. I have had my regular check ups and Vitamin levels checked which have all been fine. About 2 months ago I started having these strange episodes where I get tingling all over the right side of my body (feels like I got my funny bone except it is all over my right side). This is followed by numbness and paralysis on that side that lasts for variable times. The first episode was very short (about 15 minutes) and I hate to say it but I blew it off. I have had 2 more episodes, one lasting 30 minutes and 1 lasting 2 hours. I have been to the hospital for both of those and have had an appropriate work up for possible stroke which has been negative so far. I am seeking appropriate medical care but was curious if anyone else experienced this post-op. Just seems like an odd coincidence this starts at this time but it may be just that, a coincidence. Appreciate any helpful feedback.

Could possibly be a TIA, trans ischemic attack (mini stroke) Stroke like in symptoms but resolves within 24 hours usually. I had a few many years ago, nothing seen on MRI, CT Scan, etc. but my B12 was very low. There was really no good explanation as to why it happened.

Referred to Windsor Nov./16, Orientation Jan. 16/17, NP Mar. 6, NUT Mar.21, DR/SW Apr. 19, Approved by Dr., Dietician/SW Jun. 5 Approved, Surgical Class July 24, met the surgeon Dr. Boujani August 3/17, Pre Op Aug. 22, Opti Aug. 29, Surgery Sept. 12/17.

B12 being low is actually a very good reason for neurological issues!

Did these episodes happen on days where you skipped meals or fluids because you were busy?

This is not at all my specialty - but I wonder if you might be potassium deficient.

Vitamin levels all being fine is not information. What EXACTLY are the numbers? B12 may be within range at more than 200 but anything less than 400 can give neuro symptoms as you describe.

Perhaps I should have added that I am a physician. I'm not a neurologist but I'm not clueless either. My B12 was over 1000. I don't think I have had a B6 checked yet but it is on the list of things to be checked. My potassium has been within normal limits (no, I don't have numbers but am satisfied with this). Yes, the working diagnosis is that they are TIAs. Just seems odd that I would start having these now that I am normal body weight, normal blood pressure, ideal cholesterol, etc. I just wanted to know if anyone else had similar symptoms post-op or if this is entirely unrelated. I am getting the impression it is unrelated.

PETRA - As a physician-regardless of your area of specialty-you obviously are aware your body as been through several major, biological "shocks" (for lack of a better word), with your massive weight loss...

To answer your question: YES, I HAVE had similar episodes, and have had every neuro test, known to modern medicine. My B levels tend to run ultra HIGH, which, of course, can give off the same physical symptoms, as ultra LOW levels, so I keep my PCP and neuro on their toes! I also take 600mg Topamax daily, for chronic migraines, so tingling/numbness is often part of my daily life, making the B symptoms harder to track...But give me Topamax, or lock me in a dark room, for life!

I had migraines, prior to my 185 lb weight loss, but my symptoms, etc def intensified post op...Crappy trade off, but I'll take it...

Please DO listen to the very "smart" vitamin folks here. I have been a nurse, since 1977...and a damn good one...but I learn SOMETHING, from SOMEONE, right HERE, every single day...We are never too educated to learn
