How to lose regain

I am 2 months shy of 6 years post RNY. It took me a year to get to goal and i stayed within 5 pounds for another year. but since 2013 I have slowly gained 25 pounds. I am tired of those cute smaller clothes not fitting right! I am finally in a good frame of mind to deal with this and get it off! It might sound silly, but I am lost!! I always counted protein grams in the beginning, do I go back to that? Do I count calories more than protein? I have never stopped exercising, but I kinda gave up counting my water and protein intake. Any specific hints on how any of you managed losing again would be helpful. I tried that baratric.com site but they seem to just push their products. I want to nip this in the bud now before it gets any worse. Thanks

Track everything you eat. Most of us use the Myfitnesspal app. Cut carbs & sugar and stick with meat and veggies if you are still hungry. In the search function at the top of this site, search "regain" and you will see many many posts. Look through them and you will get tons of great advice. You can do it!! Good luck!

I'm not quite 2 years post op yet, but I'm fighting about 10 pounds of regain. Good on you for realizing what was going on and taking action.

I would say start with the basics. Right now, weigh and measure everything you eat and track it in some sort of program. Personally, I like myfitnesspal, but most of them are decent. Once you figure out how much you are eating on a regular basis, you can cut your intake by 500 calories a day and that should let you lose 1 pound a week. I would also recommend going low carb and high protein, as it will make it easier to stay away from carbs if you don't eat many.

I'm just getting back on the horse today, and I'm having some nasty carb withdrawal. Good luck, and I hope to see you around here!

Hi, SHANNON !! There are a million things I don't squat about, but you hit on a subject I feel I am MORE than qualified to preach on !!

I am 15 years post RNY, and at one time had as much as 70 lbs regain, having never reached goal, at the time, so we're talking was more than 100+, from goal...Hopeless, right???? And YEARS past that stupid "honeymoon period" ...

I had to get HONEST, with myself...Did I want it? Was I willing to work for it? A wise Lady, I used to know, had a tag line "Work as hard AT your surgery, as you worked to GET your surgery" thread...Lots of great ideas, and a fabulous way to quickly meet new, very supportive peeps...

I could on and on, about regain...a subject so very close to my heart...I am actually UNDER goal now....never could imagined THAT :)

If there is ANYTHING I can do for you, PLEASE do not hesitate to ask! Catch that regain RIGHT NOW!!

Hi Shannon,

I kept all my weight off for over 10 years and then life slapped me up side my head. Here are a couple of links to my posts about losing my regain and the list of getting back to the basics that helped me. I know you can do this!

Almost Winning the Battle of Regain - spilling my guts!

ROAR - Rockin Overeating And Regain - Stall Time

You have already taken the hardest step by saying enough is enough and now I want to get back on track. Here are some steps I hope will help you. They helped me...

Planning/Preparing

Remember when we were preparing for surgery? How many meetings, classes and such did we attend? We were told the more prepared we were the better our chances were for success. And they were right. Go through the house, car and work place and get rid of trigger foods. Stock up on foods that will keep you on track. I removed every bad carb/sugar temptation and replaced it with lots of protein, veggies, grains and fruits.

Journaling

Get back to journaling. This will help you identify when you feel like eating, stress factors and any triggers in your life. Once you identify these factors, this will help you put tools in place to keep you from eating. It became clear I was not taking time for me anymore. I worked my day job and then spent the rest of my time caring for my husband. It was easy to reach for fast, prepackaged food. Since I purged my home I have to eat clean as there are no other options LOL

Use a tool to track you're eating and exercise like Getting Started with Health Tracker. Once I started to track ever bite and drink it became clear why I had gained.

Goals/Rewards

Make a list of goals for yourself. Make them realistic and small. Some of mine were move more, purge all junk from my home, eat more protein.

Food

In general, a long term post-weight loss surgery eating plan includes foods that are high in protein, and low in fat?, calories, and sugar. Important, vitamins and minerals are provided as supplements. (if you had a different surgery adjust this to your food plan).

Water

Water is our Best Friend. I have to say I never went back to pop or any bad drinks, however I was drinking tea like crazy. What is wrong with drinking tea? I was either using sugar or 3 equals and 3 sweet n lows per 32 ounce glass. So I was either pushing to be diabetic or get cancer. I found once I started carrying a bottle of water around 24/7 (yes had one at my bedside) I lost the cravings for the sugar and I KNOW those artificial sweeteners are not good for me. Look I am old and if you add up all the artificial sweeteners I have consumed I am sure I am at the rat in the lab getting cancer threshold.

MOVE!

I can't say enough about how key this was for me. The reason I kept my weight off for almost 10 years was no matter what, I kept moving. If I could not go to the gym I would walk. I loved Zumba, bootcamp workouts, lifting weights. When I stopped, the weight started coming back. So for me I am starting slow to avoid injury by walking and using some of the workouts on my Demand TV. Find something you love to do and it won't feel like a pain in the *** to do daily.

Support

If it's an option "run" don't walk to a support group.

Keep me posted on how you are doing.
