Hi Everyone. I'm on day 8 of 21 of my Optifast pre surgery diet. My surgery is May 15 at Toronto Western Hospital. I haven't cheated at all. I have 4 packages of Optifast 900 per day, lots of Water (over 2 litres), only 1 serving of fat free Jello and 1 cup of low sodium beef broth. I have NAFLD and was told by my surgeon that I really need to shrink my liver before surgery or they might not be able to RNY and will do gastric sleeve instead. I'm worried I'm not in ketosis. My breath isn't bad, I'm still very hungry and the ketostix I bought only show a trace of ketosis. I've definitely lost weight. My clothes are much looser. Not sure how much weight. I don't have a scale that measures that high. I am a male, 53, and 455 lbs. If anyone has any comments could you please let me know? Maybe my worries are unfounded

Ketostix are extremely unreliable. If you haven't cheated and have stuck rigorously to the plan, that's all you can do.

Work the plan. You'll do fine, even though you're just a little feller. I was worse off than you.

If the sticks are slightly purple you are probably in ketosis. As Grim said, the strips are unreliable.

The optifast has enough carbs that may prevent you going into ketosis. At 15-16gr of carbs per serving - that is not as low carbs as someone may need. Unless you exercise a lot and your body is burning all the carbs and sugar.

it worked for thousands before you, so I wouldn't worry. if you aren't cheating just trust the process. Have you lost any weight?

Thanks for everyone's input. It's very helpful. I have lost weight for sure. My clothes fit much looser. I'm not sure how much though. I don't have a scale that goes that high. I guess I'll have to wait for my surgery date of May 15 to see how much I've lost.
