Fat enough?

Hi there, I'm new to the group and considering WLS. Just curious what you think is big enough to have surgery. Or is it really based on overall BMI. I AM 5'4 and 210. I'm guessing my BMI IS AT LEAST 45%

Google "BMI Calculator".

You don't need to guess at your BMI - there are plenty of calculators online. As for what BMI you need? That depends on your insurance company or the surgeon you're willing to pay out of pocket.

This right here. If you want insurance to assist you with payment you need to contact them and find out if they will even cover it. There will likely be rules about the BMI they need you to be at which for me was 40. A certain BMI alone may not be enough they will likely want medical history with issues such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Then to round it out you may need to go on a medically supervised diet for 6 months maybe and or supply them with a long medical history of you trying to remove the weight.

And your BMI is only 36 with a height of 5'4" and weight of 210 lb.

That was a typo. I used the calculator and also got a result of 36%. I live in BC where the wait is very, very long.

At that BMI, you will likely need a co-morbidity as well.

With the long wait for WLS in Canada, another option is self-pay with a U.S. or Mexican Bariatric surgeon.

I have a low BMI and recently went to Tijuana for MGB surgery. I also had/have co-morbidities but insurance wouldn't cover my surgery, and I didn't want to gain weight to qualify. I'm very happy with the decision I made and the surgeon I selected (Dr. Ramos Kelly).
