Which surgery did you have and why?

Hi all,

I am wondering which surgery you had, RNY or VSG, and why?

I am really torn between the two. Would really appreciate your experiences! Obviously I'll talk to my surgeon for the final decision... just looking to know people's experiences and thoughts about their choice/journeys (pros and cons).

Thanks!

I think both surgeries are very effective. I chose VSG. I didn't have GERD, which makes VSG a bad idea, nor was I diabetic, which makes RNY a great choice.

Thanks! GERD is my main concern. I am on a med that causes me severe heartburn. I know I am easily prone to it. I worry VSG would be a bad choice. :(

It absolutely would be a bad choice. Long term use of PPIs is contra indicated and long term GERD is no joke for health either.

Thanks Kim. You had RNY more than a decade ago. Amazing! Any complications?

It'll be 13 years this July, yikes! No complications at all, just the constant fight to maintain the weightloss lol. I've stayed really healthy over all this time, although I will say I think it's because I'm totally responsible in taking my supplements, getting my labs done etc. My PCP has several RNY patients and he considers me the healthiest and most compliant. He was shocked at how far out I was as his others are nowhere near ...

Staying present on OH does help me stay mindful and I've met lots of great folks over the years, both online and in person

Amazing tips, and congratulations. Diligence is obviously really important and it's what everyone here really talks about: permanent lifestyle change.

I initially wanted VSG. I was afraid of the rerouted guts, but I ended up being diagnosed with GERD. My surgeon suggested that the GERD, along with a BMI of 55 at the time, would make RNY a better fit for me. I went with RNY. I've been very happy with it.
