Road trip! Food ideas

I drive cross country twice a year (there and back). I haven't done it since surgery, but I have found taking too many snacks means I eat too much. Snacking and sitting are a bad combo. So I would pack for a few emergency meals just in case you can't find anything appropriate, but snacking is as dangerous on the road, if not more, than snacking at home.

Nuts and pork rinds are easy to get at any gas station. Cheese, cold cuts. jerky - some can be full of sugar, plus it can be hard on the pouch.

Yes I'd be nervous to try jerky on the road. ?I don't like the pork rinds in Canada but we only carry 1 brand here.

I make my own trail mix combo. I prepeel the hard boiled eggs and portion them in sandwich bags with the salt and pepper already in there. Pretty much proportion anything I bring. Too tempting otherwise. Don't overlook just bringing eat- grilled chicken, steak as long as it's not messy. I don't eat this much at home but do bring raw veggies if I need to crunch on something.

I do rely on gum and tic tacs on the road to keep from eating too much.

The sugar alcohol in gum plus the chewing (swallowing air) gives me horrible gas. The SA gas is horrible.. if you don't chew gum yet - don't to do it on on a trip. Gas while in a car is not good idea...Even when you are by yourself.

You need to be careful with gum. A lot of it has sugar in it.

While I agree gum is not in a healthy food category... the way I see it is I chew Doublemint gum for 10 calories and 2g of sugar it helps me on the road from overeating on food that will add up to a lot more calories. When driving long distance (i have been known to do 15-17 hours in day-myself) there is something about eating and chewing that helps you stay focused on the road... It is a sensory thing...So while I have my snacks, the gum and tic tacs keep me going...
