Hey, I've been down with the flu for a little bit now. I feel bad for not getting pretty much any protein down. Eating has been out of the question other than broth, and I can't seem to stomach protein drinks (the consistency at the moment just makes everything worse). Should I just stop worrying about protein while sick and focus on fluids? I've been drinking like crazy to stay hydrated.

I'm sorry you're sick. I'd definitely just focus on hydration - water, broth, whatever you can get in. Your body needs the liquids the most!

Yes, don't worry about the protein...do what you can. Staying hydrated is way more important...

Hydration is key. They also make clear (more expensive) protein drinks the consistency of water.

A certain percentage of protein is labile in the body; this means it's floating around ambient and can be used. It's a small amount, however you can definitely go without protein for some time.

We can not eat for days (if not weeks) without protein. It isn't necessarily ideal long term for many reasons, however a few days will not be unsafe. More harmful to be nauseous and vomit for the new stomach, likely, than to not eat for a few days.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

Thank you. I read all my replies late since I posted and then didn't come out from under my covers in what seems like forever! It's good to know that my body had a bit left over to run on. Thankfully I'm finally out of the worst part and am getting my bearings back. It really had a strong hold on me though, thought I was going to be sick forever.
