Got my first kidney stone this afternoon. I knew 64oz wasn't enough for me or that all this protein would come back to bite me. Liquid Vicodin and ureter relaxing pills. Wish me luck.

I have a history of them, so I'm concerned that will be me too! Feel better, they suck!

I also have a history of stones (first one when I was 12, ugh) and I've had a few post-op. The "cool" thing is that they seem to pass a lot easier/more quickly now. So there's that!

My first I was a senior in high school and it was a 2cm stone (not a typo). It took forever for them to diagnose because I didn't have the typical debilitating pain. Just intervals of bad pain + recurrent kidney infections. They blasted that one up and I was ok.

The next was in 2008 and that one required me to have a stent placed for 2 weeks and I was in the hospital battling the infection for 3 days. Boo.

I think my largest was "only" around 15mm. Good thing there are no kidney stone olympics, eh? :D We did see an image of one in Anatomy class that filled the ENTIRE kidney. Holy crap.

What did you need a stent for? The MIL of a friend of mine just needed a stent put in for a kidney stone and it's not something I ever needed, so I couldn't explain to her why it was necessary. I've only known men getting stents for stones, so I has assumed it was due to the longer urethra needing to be held open.

A stent from the kidney, around the stone in the ureter, into the bladder, so urine drains out of the kidney. This is to prevent or lessen hydronephrosis, "over full kidney".

Thanks! I'll pass this on to my friend. I wonder what prompts the need for a stent in some cases but not in others.

I think it depends on if /how the stone is moving, if there is blockage and if there is infection.
