Is cutting carbs necessary?

My nutritionist never specifically told me to watch how many carbs I took in, and for that matter, how much protein I should be aiming for. Really the only "requirement" I was given was to eat 1/4 cup protein and 1/4 cup of fruits or veggies at each meal. I've been looking over my food logs and my biggest carb intakes are from my gummy vitamins. Should I be focusing more on keeping my carb counts lower?

Well what are your total carbs at each day? Yes you should watch them.

I don't count the carbs in my vitamins- to me that is over complicating this. (And I would not use gummy vitamins personally.)

I'm usually between 30 and 60 carbs a day.

You just had surgery, your focus should be your liquids and protein. maybe a bite or two of vegetable... the idea that you need a 1/4 cup of vegetable or fruit at every meal is really overboard and fruit isn't needed at this point at all.

I never counted my total days carbs- but I made sure the individual items I was eating weren't high carb, and the protein shakes had 5g of sugar or less.

You need to be counting your protein- you have to work up to it, but 60-80g protein is really the minimum, and 64oz of fluids is the minimum fluid intake.

What kind of gummy vitamins are you taking? Multi? I understand in the beginning most people are directed to take a chewable, but gummies go in the category of flintstone kids vitamins... not really the best choice. They aren't the most complete, and don't contain Thiamine an essential vitamin.

I am continually astonished at how little guidance some people get from their surgeons/nutritionists. Especially since I was given comprehensive guidelines including ounces and what to eat over 6 different phases for the first 9 weeks after surgery. I'm always willing to share my program's booklet on nutrition guidelines and phases. If you're interested in it just message me, I'm happy to send you the link.

This (GmaDiana's post) is the closest to what my nutritionist told me.

Plus, NO gummy vitamins!

I count the carbs/sugars in everything including my vitamins. Gummy vitamins were absolutely forbidden by my program.

I don't eat a 1/4 c of veggies per meal at 3 years out.

Hello

I have to agree that all programs are not the same.

We were given comprehensive teaching & handouts.

I most definitely learned a lot here.

I have given up breads, pastas, potatoes, rice & anything else that is white until I reach goal..

I shoot for 90-120 grams of protein daily.

Gummies vitamins were forbidden...

I don't really have room for veggies. I focus on dense proteins... I have however been snacking on peppers/celery with hummus poolside... Lots and lots of chewing!

I am 10 weeks out...

Hope this helps

I agree with Mahalo. While I was losing weight I avoided refined carbs like the devil. The only carbs I was getting were from dairy and some fruits and vegetables. I didn't deviate from my plan one bit. I had to practice discipline because I never had any where food was concerned and I wasn't able to mess things up using my own judgement considering where it had gotten me before.

In fact, it was over 5 years before I even allowed myself to eat anything with gluten and even today I am very careful with refined carbs because I know what a slippery slope that can lead to.

There is plenty of time in maintenance to figure out how to eat those things but you may never get there if you start too soon. Your plan may allow bread and crackers and those kind of things but it doesn't mean you have to eat them and if you are like me and have a problem with those kind of carbs the longer you put off adding them the better.
