hey all - i'm twelve days post op and have had zero complications with any food i've tried (mainly because i haven't tried anything not approved!)..... but i've been thinking a lot about dumping.

would love to know the following:

  • when was your first dumping experience compared to your surgery date?
  • how did it make you feel?
  • what food caused it?

just curious!

you may know this, but a lot of RNY'ers don't dump. The statistic that gets thrown around a lot is that only about 30% of RNY'ers dump. I don't know if there's any hardcore research behind that figure, but suffice it to say, less than half of us dump. I never have - so someone else may be able to respond to your questions.

Yup, what catwoman7 said. I do not dump- but do get adverse reaction to foods that doesn't rise to the text definition of dumping.

Fried foods is what I noticed first. A mild but constant stomach upset. I can't not eat fried/hi fat foods. Even extremely rich foods will. A lot of sweets will have my heart rate up . On two occasion since surgery I've had increased heart rate, along with sweatiness, a general overwhelmed feeling as if I would pass out. I've not had diarrhea at all post op.

I have gotten sick once. And I'm almost positive it as because I ate too fast, and swallowed without thinking. I literally forgot to eat (wasn't hungry) and ate fast... BAD IDEA!!!

I know when my body is telling me to stop, and when I'm full. But as far as "dumping" it hasn't happened. You may not be a dumper. Like above user has said, 30% of bypass patients actually dump (don't quote me on that, I just hear that a lot.) I have yet to try things that could make me dump because tbh, I'm terrified lol.

I'm perfectly fine. The "good" thing about getting sick after bypass is the minute is out the better you feel. I literally went to the restroom, got sick, and walked out perfectly fine.

My ex husband was MD of a company and we were at an international corporate dinner in Singapore. I felt ill, passed out, drama, ambulance, fine once I reached hospital.

Will never forget it and nor will the gazillion other people there. I was about 3 + years out. Beware catered food lol

I am lactose intolerant and was looking for a dairy free drink that I could heat up and have in the evening (it was January and I was missing my cappuccino). I found a soy based boxed drink at the health food store. I was pretty early out from surgery, like 2 months. I heated it up and was enjoying it in front of the fire place. I started to sweat, so I, logically moved away from the fire. The sweating increased and my heart started to pound out of my chest. I seriously thought I was having a heart attack. Then the dizziness, nausea, and diarrhea started. My husband was ready to call 911. It was BAD!

When I started to feel better (a few hours later) I read the label of the soy drink. It had 53 grams of sugar per cup!!!! Moral of the story... read labels! My big mistake was thinking if I bought it at a natural foods store it was healthy. Stupid newbie mistake.

I rarely dump because I choose to not eat sugar. I learned just how bad dumping can be. Don't experiment. It's not worth knowing whether you dum*****t. Just assume you dump and choose food accordingly.

Rolling on the floor wishing I could die lol.

It only had to happen a few times for me to learn the lesson: leave sugar alone!
