I keep hearing more and more about Turbinado sugar, and seeing it, in recipes. What's the benefits, in your opinion?

Gina, I don't know if there are any "benefits." It certainly tastes good. :) And it's made from cane sugar and is a little bit brown, which seems like all of nature's possible goodness might not have been stripped from it. (I'm purely guessing on all of this.) In any event, it's no big deal -- just 20 calories. At the very least, it's not corn fructose. ;)

Gina, I found an article on thekitchn.com about it...this is the excerpt:

"Turbinado sugar is made from the initial pressing of sugar cane. Since it's pulled out before the processing is complete, more of the natural molasses remains in the crystals. If we're strictly talking about calories, brown sugar and Turbinado sugar do rank a little lower than white cane sugar, but this is largely because they carry more moisture not because there's something inherently healthier about them."

I guess a smidgen less processed, but it's still just sugar.

Hope this helped.

I have kind of a funny story about turbinado sugar. Way back before WLS, I used to do straight up sugar in my coffee. I was at a friend's Christmas party and they had a coffee urn with a dish of the turbinado sugar. So I pour come coffee and put in some of the sugar, stir, taste. Not sweet enough. (I like my coffee like my men, light brown and sweet.) I put in more, stir, taste, still not enough. More, stir, taste...wait a minute. Put the spoon all the way to the bottom of the cup and I hear sugar GRINDING. Oh **** Here's the terrible part--I was at a friend's party and didn't want to waste it, so I DRANK IT ANYWAY.

Worst coffee ever.

Oops. That would certainly have been me as well. I'd have been chewing the sugar...hahahaha. Crunchcrunchcrunchcrunch

I tell wait staff when I order coffee "Please bring the the Cow and the Splenda factory? I like a little coffee with my Splenda and cream."

My worst coffee ever story: Hubs and I were staying in a hotel which offered a continental breakfast, but we'd just missed it. We really just wanted coffee anyway, so no big-but the coffee pot was empty. The owner very graciously offered to make a fresh pot ( HUGE pot ) and before I could say "it's okay, no worries" he starts the whole production going...it took 20 minutes to brew. When it was done, I went to make our cups of coffee and there were tons of coffee grounds in it and the coffee tasted like sludge. I felt bad that the owner made an entire pot just for us, so I just made up the cups and went back to the room with them-and made sure to thank him profusely. I drank about half of it before I had to give it up. It was awful. Hubs drank his...lol. It was caffeine.

That's a great coffee story. I too have suffered terrible coffee just to get that caffeine. :D

Re: Splenda. I have two jackets from Scott eVest--they make jackets with a ton of secret pockets--and in both of them I have what I call my "Splenda Pocket". I also brought a whole sandwich baggie to the UK with us. No ragerts.

Haha..

I carry around an entire wristlet filled with Splenda packets.

I need to look for those vests for my sons. They love hidden pockets!!

LOL! Yeah, Turbinado cane sugar takes a while to dissolve. ;)

I used to drink 2-3 cups a day before surgery. Now I drink 5-6. I can't wait to get out of bed to drink coffee. I really enjoy it, every sip.

I buy Starbucks Cinnamon Dolce ($9-14 depending on store) or Torinni or Skinny Girl SF flavorings and use Premier Protein as my creamer. If I am going to use a processed, chemical food, I may as well get some benefit--protein.

I love my coffee. In fact it is 1:08 am, and I am home from work. Think I will have a cup before bed.

I drink both coffee and tea and yes drink way more since surgery. I could easily just drink that all day.
