Oh, and I want to add - I'm a HUGE proponent of being open and honest about surgery but, yeah, sometimes you can't be in order to protect your own mental health and this sounds like one of those situations. Especially at 5 weeks post-op.
I would recommend that you have a plan for when they do find out, since chances are they will eventually and they might be mad that you "lied" to them, but at this point you should do what you need to do to keep your sanity.

13 months out and I have only told one person, my mother. Those that have noticed and asked I just say "I've decided it is time to get a handle on my weight." Around five weeks out I went to a potluck, ate only a few bites of what I was allowed and just told people I wasn't very hungry...no one even questioned it. For me, my father is the one person I will never tell I had a VSG.
Offer no explanations unless asked. Most of the time, people don't notice what you're eating or not eating.
If someone notices and comments, "I'm having a stomach issue and I've just lost my appetite."
You should be eating food by 5 weeks. Put a little on your plate and move it around. Again, people mostly don't notice you.
My husband got "the flu" (surgery). And after "being sick" (recovery) he realized he just needed to eat less food and that's how he lost weight and people stopped bugging him.
It it gets too much, just put your hand on your mouth and make the "I think I'm going to throw up face" and turn away.
Hiding your surgery doesn't sound terrible at all.
