VSG
At 5 weeks out, I was on solid foods. Couldn't eat but just a few bites. If you are truly on protein shakes, then that would be a good thing to say. If you have advanced your foods from that though, just indicate that you are choosing to eat small portions of high protein low carb meals. Many won't even notice if you move food around on your plate and not act like anything is different.
I still have only told about six people. I just feel that it's my business. Many have begun telling me I look great, which is lovely. Some ask what I'm doing and I tell them I'm working really hard, exercising and eating better. As for my portion sizes, I tell people I eat small amounts through the day.
Five weeks out you should be feeling better, but definitely won't be eating a lot. Maybe you could avoid having a meal together? In a pinch have a Greek yogurt or protein shake and say you aren't super hungry.
Sure, you can totally hide it. But at 5 weeks post-op are you actually still only drinking protein shakes? I was in soft foods at that point.
If you are drinking protein shakes, or whatever, I recommend picking a script and sticking to it.
"I had some stomach issues and my doctor suggested a liquid diet to let my stomach rest, it's pretty gross, so I won't go into details. Can you believe they killed off Carl on the Walking Dead?!"
"After a particularly gross food poisoning experience, I decided to give my stomach a break and stick to liquids. Can you believe they killed off Carl on the Walking Dead?!"
"Believe me, you don't want to hear the details, suffice it to say that the chest burster scene in Alien looks tame by comparison. Can you believe they killed off Carl on the Walking Dead?!"
Basically you pick a script, just one, and repeat it EVERY SINGLE TIME the topic comes up. No variation. You might feel stupid at first, but it'll get easier to repeat, and people will start to get the hint that this is not a topic that's up for discussion. You can pick whatever redirection you want - my bit about Carl is just my generic example when I'm posting about How To Script. :)

My go-to line is, literally, "So how about that local sports team?" It's an OBVIOUS diversion, often embarrasses the nosy person, and works like a charm.
