Worst Thing Said to You After Losing A Lot of Weight...

Mine was actually last month at the end of my bariatric center's monthly support group meeting. For background, when I first met with the team at the center in December 2015 I weighed 442lbs. I had surgery June 17, 2016 weighing 364lbs. Last month at support group I weighed about 268lbs. This lady who had never been at a meeting before said to me at the end of the meeting "you always hear about how successful surgery is and how quickly people drop large amounts of weight. It's good for you to come to these meetings and show that isn't true and that it doesn't work for everyone"

I seriously wanted to throat punch her but instead just smiled and said "I'm actually pleased with the 174lbs I've lost since working with the center" and continued on my merry way. But yeah, her words definitely got in my head because I was already in a mental slump over my weightloss halting for the previous month so I let it bother me for a while. I have support group again this saturday and seriously hope she isn't there, I might not be able to be so polite a second time.

You are very restrained. Very.

What a total C-word.

Seriously.

let's just say she was lucky we were in the hall way with lots of people around. if we'd been in the underground parking garage with no around...well...

and i really mean I hope I don't see her again because obviously, it still irritates me and I won't be able to be so "restrained" at a second meeting.

seriously, fat shaming at a WLS support group meeting, how low can someone be?

I actually wish I could go with you to help you throat punch her.

Seriously. Heinous.

All joking aside, I am really sorry that was said to you. She's obviously a complete asshat.

Heidkikat -- you already know how I feel about what happened.

Still thinking I might fly to where you are and kick her in the nuts on your behalf.

My grandmother is the greatest offender in the family. She is 94, so I just shake my head. Once I got past 160 or 150, she started saying I had lost too much. When my mom and I first had surgery in 2008, my mom found an abdominal lump and was diagnosed with cancer. The surgery saved her life. Chemo was horrible, and she did look like a concentration camp victim. To this day she struggles to keep the weight on. She eats every two or three hours. And there goes grandmother,"you need to gain some weight". Like she is trying to lose. Since chemo, she rarely has an appetite, and eating is a chore. Some people are so clueless. But they are so often wrapped up in themselves - its all about them and they really don't care about your answer. They just want your attention with their shock value.

I never got what I considered bad comments. A few times, after looking at my driver's license photo, I got a "holy crap!" But really, I always understood that people were happy for me.

I am also certain that man react very differently to body image issues than women. Being called "big guy" or "fat *******" is much more likely to be a term of endearment than an insult.

My people are not like yours.
