My responses:

  • "You're getting too skinny!! You don't want to look sick -- when are you going to stop?"

It's relative. Are you getting too fat?

  • "People look so much older when they lose a lot of weight."

It's relative. Are you looking a lot older?

  • "I know XXX who had WLS and gained it all back."

I know XXX who had brain surgery and they're still stupid

  • "I am losing weight the old fashioned way/hard way."

You're stronger/smarter then me!

  • "I always wanted to tell you to lose weight."

I would of gained more if you had

  • "So what size do you wear now?"

A lot smaller then you

  • "You've lost a lot of weight, how much 50, 100 pounds??

850 pounds. I'm almost there!

  • "You look SOOOOOOOOOO much better now!"

I do, don't I!

  • "I liked you better/You looked prettier when you were fat."

You did too!

I haven't quite hit 50 lbs yet, and almost everyone that I know has been so supportive of my decision to have WLS. There is one notable exception, and it's really bothered me.

My cousin is in another province, and she's also a Beachbody coach- if you don't know they're workouts from home that are around 30 minutes. I've been in her Facebook groups for over a year, and was very open and honest about having surgery. A couple of weeks ago she posted that it was fun Friday and for people to post related pics. So I posted one from My Fitness Pal that said I'd lost xx lbs- I don't remember the exact amount. Anyway, she deleted my post, and sent me a message that she didn't think her group was the best place for me to post that - even though people post their weight loss all the time. She said that she was promoting a slower, approach to weight-loss or something along that line, and several people had messaged her to ask her how I'd lost the weight. The gist of her message was that I had taken the easy way out. I have always felt that was the way she felt, but this cemented it for me. So I turned off the notifications for the group, and for her. People are always talking about how positive she is and what a great coach she is, but it just really hurt that she couldn't support me in one of the biggest decisions I've ever made.

MIL told my husband that he had a brand new wife. Too bad he didn't get a brand new mom. She's evil sometimes.

"I heard you were having surgery. When is it, again?"

"How heavy were you?"

"That's a lot of weight that you've dropped. Keep it up!"

"Which kind of wrinkle cream are you using?"

"What size are you wearing now?"

"What are you going to do about excess skin?"

"Too bad you couldn't have done this years ago!"

"When you have a thigh gap, you'll feel so much better!"

Yeah....and it's only been three and a half months!

The encouragement! I feel bad for people with so much negativity in their hearts.

Quite possibly the worst thing said to me after surgery and 118 pound weight loss was, "Is everything okay? You look like a crack addict."
