A Brief Statement from The Missing

We, a group of long term members of OH, decided to step back from the public forums for one week because we felt that Obesity Help was applying the TOS inconsistently across the membership.

As long time members, with a collective membership on OH of over 160 years, we enjoy the support of our peers. And while we appreciate the forum OH provides for us to share and learn, we feel an environment that is fair to all is imperative.

To us this means that a member who intentionally posts to agitate is held to the same standard as the member *****acts negatively to that post. Allowing members to instigate, and then edit or delete their posts after the fact, encourages a hostile environment.

There are many others who joined us in our lack of participation this past week ? this is just a partial list, and I apologize to those I left off.

We also want to make it clear that this statement is all the discussion we care to have on this subject, so please don?t ask for further details. Getting bogged down in minutiae of who said what to whom would be counterproductive.

We feel strongly that we provide value to the site with this experience and knowledge and hope that henceforth we are able to continue sharing that wisdom in an equitable environment. We would just like to get back to supporting others, and being supported ourselves.

I'm new to OH, and completely missed whatever happened. So I won't get into that, except to say that as a long time netizen (I go back to the AOL dial-up days), I strongly support even-handed and transparent moderation on group sites like this.

I also want to say I'm glad it was a short-term withdrawal, as the vets are the people who have the experience and information to share with those of us just starting down this road. It's my experience with support sites that a lot of people move on once they no longer need the support, the ones who stick around to lend advice and support with their experience are an incredibly valuable resource. I haven't gotten to know all of you yet, but I hope to.

I was about to go on a rant about online discussion groups, keyboard warriors, and invoking the Wheaton Rule. Instead, I'll leave it at this and say thank you for your measured response and your presence here.

I have to say that my success is due to the vets and listening to what they had to say and their support. I'm 15 lbs pounds away from my goal. I had my RNY on 9 September 2016 and so far have lost 82lbs. Thank you, thank you, thank you ... hope you all come back. You are missed!

Thank you Grim. I absolutely agree that "a member who intentionally posts to agitate [should be] held to the same standard as the member *****acts negatively to that post. Allowing members to instigate, and then edit or delete their posts after the fact, encourages a hostile environment."
