6 month appointment and update!

Hi everyone! I thought I'd make a separate post about my 6 month appointment I had yesterday.

I'll get the not great news out of the way first:

  • my blood sugar was a bit on the low side. She wasn't too worried, but just said I need to be aware to contact them if I start to display any symptoms of reactive hypoglycemia. they'd like to see me increase my complex carbs at each meal, and add a second snack to my day to balance things out. some of the foods she suggested are trigger foods for me, so I'll have to play around with my menu a bit.(and she suggested some weird microwave rice that's high in fiber. No thanks.)
  • B12 is on the low side of normal. This isn't anything new, I've had that for years, but I'm going to increase my sublinguals from every second day, to daily.
  • My good cholesterol is a little on the low side, she suggested upping my omega 3s.

Now having said all that, she said these are not big deals, just fine tuning. Nothing is in an unhealthy range, just lower end of normal. And everything else is in the normal range.

My big concern is waiting until I'm 50 or break a bone to find out I've lost bone density, so I asked her opinion on the value of having a dexa scan done and pay for it myself. She said it's a good idea if I can afford it. Not only will it give some info about how your density is now, it will be useful to have as a baseline when I turn 50, in determining the level of intervention required)

onto the good stuff:

overall she said I'm doing great and she can tell I've embraced my new lifestyle, and that will benefit me in the long run.

some stats:

High weight:378

surgery weight: 346

Current weight:253

im averaging about 15 pounds a month. I'm happy with that.

preop waist circumference: 66

current waist circumference:41

starting BMI: 64.8

current Bmi: 43.4

I still have a long way to go, but these past 6 months have been amazing. And I'd go through surgery every month if i had to, to feel this good.

That's amazing- that really sucks about the bone density scan- I am going to ask my family dr. about that too. I know I will probably get the same answer as I'm sure it's probably provincial guidelines- but I will let you know!

You have done so well! Keep up the great work.

RNY Jan 12, 2017 Lost 137 lbs but regained 60.

77 lbs lost and counting!

Losing the regain! I got this!

Thanks! The place I looked up that does them locally said the cost is 100$, so assuming there's no hidden fees, it's not that bad.

You are doing so great! I'm curious about the bone-density scan myself. I'm just turning 40 this year, but my family has a history of problems with osteoporosis....both my grandfather and mother. It's something I will definitely want to watch post-RNY.

Keep up the great work!

You have done an awesome job so far. As for bone density, I had one at age 50 and again at age 58. Both were good. Evidently, carrying around extra weight helps our bones stay strong. Built in weight lifting maybe. My doctor said I will need another one in a few years. Will be interesting to see results after weightloss.

You are doing awesome! I had surgery at 351 so we have very similar stats. Great job! You look beautiful and happy in both pics but I see how strong and healthy you feel in the current pic :) I know the feeling. I would do surgery every week if that's what it took to feel this healthy!
