Does everyone tell their coworkers that you had surgery?

Should I tell everyone I had WLS, (After the surgery)?  I'm embarrassed and ashamed that I let myself gain so much weight.  Would it be bad if I didn't tell everyone?

Noooo it's not bad! it's your business! you don't owe anyone any explanation about why you've gain weight or why you've decided to take the step to get healthy again.  Share if you want to but you owe it to no one.

I had surgery in March and I told everyone in late July of that year.  I consider my WLS to be "public information" at this point.  I'm almost 3 years post-op and it rarely comes up in conversation now, but I am completely open about it when it does.

I told no one at all. I have a sedentary job and was back in my office five days after surgery. I only took two days off and worked from home on Friday.

I didn't tell them about my hemorrhoids, either. No one but my spouse and my medical care team has a right to know about my health.

Everyone sees me eating healthy foods in small portions and working out, so they naturally assume that's the entire story. I am a private person in a cut-throat field where appearance is highly valued. Believe me, I had no desire to share, and they didn't earn my trust.

You don't owe your coworkers anything except pulling your weight on the job. Everything else is up to your discretion.

I told no one except a single friend who visited me in the hospital and drove me home. Not even my family!

i did and do tell people I had hiatal hernia surgery ( not even a lie because it was part of my gastric bypass when it becomes obvious I have to eat slowly or very little. No one questions me.

I told management that I was having it done because they wanted to know why I needed three weeks off for recovery. Otherwise I only tell people if they ask.

It's a very personal decision.  No one needs to know if you don't want them to.

As others have said, it's a personal decision. I told co-workers once I had my surgery scheduled (which was about 2 weeks in advance). I have 8 people reporting to me and they care about my well-being and would have wondered.

I told my boss (duh--I needed off for the surgery and doctor's visits) and she told the entire office.  When I confronted her about it, she said that since I didn't tell her it was "private," she didn't think I cared that everyone knew.  It wasn't cool then and it isn't cool now.  I do get questions about it and I answer truthfully.
