2 year surgery anniversary

So i have passed the two year mark.  It has been a great ride so far.  The most important thing i have learned in two years i learned from the wonderful people on these boards.  The veterans are just a wealth of information.  I read every day and try to add to the conversion when i can.

I had a bod pod test and a Dexa scan done to test my BMI.  They were very similar with a 20 BMI for the bod pod and 21 BMI for the Dexa Scan.  I am a few months from 51 years of age so i am very happy with my BMI.  I do love to run and work out with a trainer.

I have maintained a 100 pound weight lost and still eat my meals protein first.  I have added back in most foods and honestly sometimes a few to many carbs.  I have sugar once in awhile but find that it does not really work for me.  Can literally put me to sleep after 5 M & M's  but this is really not a bad thing helps me stay on track.

My GF has been the best coach, and support i could ever ask for.  I have totally changed the way I eat and cook and it works for both of us.

I do recognize that I was given a wonderful tool.  But alas just a tool that I must continue to work.  If i could tell a newbie anything is that with time you will be able to eat more and must stay true to protein first.

I have included a few pictures and yes i am a huge Patriots fan!

Thanks again vets for the support encouragement and the ass kicking when needed.

Are the 20 and 21 BMI's or bodyfat percentages? I thought BMI was based on height/weight.

Hi there,

in looking at the body spec (dexa scan paper work) it says total body fat %.

total mass 128 pounds

fat tissue 30.3 pounds

lean tissue 93 lbs

Total body fat 20 %

for my age 50 - 59 I fell in the 0-20th percentile for body fat

I visceral fat (between the organs was .51 (do not want higher then 2.5)

overall the said the muscle tone of a marathon runner which at this point makes sense.  I do run 30 to 40 miles per week plus work out with a trainer.

the bod pod was the lower one but do not have that info here at work.

this was my 1st dexa scan and my second bod pod.  I had the bod pod done last year said 17 percent body fat, but I have put on 7 pounds since that was taken last jan 2016.

at this point I love to exercise and hope to continue that for years to come but as the people on our boards say many of them left the gym and found other excercies that they enjoy now.

hope I answered your questions in my very long essay.

have a great day,

bonnie

20-21 % body fat is great. Lower than that - could be not that good for your health as a woman - unless you plan to maintain taht with very vigorous exercise.

below 20% - it may be consider not that great for women over 50... My doc -endo - cringed when she saw that my BF% went to 20%...She consider taht to low and indicated to me that such a low body fat% can cause more hormonal imbalances later on.. plus warned me about more severe RH ... less "reserves" that our body can be very stubborn to try to maintain and instead start suing more lean body mass (muscles) during crisis (i.e. recovery from surgery, illness, etc.)

Hi there,

I did meet with my surgeon and she also shared her concerns.  I am to lose no additional weight this year.  But as i told her i have not lost any weight in the last 14 months.  I also have no intentions of changing my workout plans so i think i am at the lowest body fat i can get too.  i had low potassium and low iron when i went to my surgeon in the beginning of Feb. so am going to work on that for the next 6 months then back in for another round of blood tests.  the potassium was a surprise and she said most likely due to the amount of seating and the amount of fluid i drink daily.  When i meet with my general doctor i will speak to her also about the body fat level.

have a great weekend,
