What rule(s) do you not follow?

My surgeon doesn't have a lot of rules, and I'm not required to be on a low-carb diet.  So I'm not technically breaking any "rules".  However, I do some things that I know are not helping me get to my goal.

I occasionally still have sugar-y foods.  Overall, I'm staying away from simple carbs and sugars, but I occasionally decide I want something just 'cause.  However, I don't eat massive quantities anymore, for the most part I am satisfied with just a few bites and then I'm done.  I also don't emotionally eat anymore, but I'm still finding that if I'm physically feeling icky I get cravings for carbs and sugar.  I'm working to find ways to feed my body what it needs instead of giving into the cravings when I'm feeling icky, but I'm not all the way there yet.  Since I have chronic conditions, this is an important one, because I can have weeks and weeks where I feel icky, and I can't let that get the best of me and my diet choices.

I was working out semi regularly, but in December started having a rash of almost daily migraines and have barely been managing work (thank goodness for school break) so I haven't been working out in about 6 weeks at this point.  My kiddo and I last night worked out an at-home workout program to get me started back up (she's a kinesiology major) so I'm addressing this one too.

I break lots of rules other surgeons have - I chew gum, I use straws, I drink carbonated beverages (now that my sleeve is tolerating it, and not a lot, but sometimes).  I eat carbs.  LOL.

I still drink during meals, but just sips because it feels like food sticks in my throat.  I'm working on eating slower and chewing more, and hoping that will lessen that stuck feeling so I can do better with the drinking during meals.  I spent decades bolting my food down like crazy, and it's been probably the hardest thing for me to change.

So glad that you are working on getting better! Sorry you've been feeling icky. :(

I stopped working out as much, too. I do walk 2-3 miles each day, though. Good job on getting started again!

I don't drink carbonated drinks anymore. For some reason, they taste awful now. I'm glad, though. :p

Ugh, yes... I have a hard time not eating fast, too. I eat so quickly and it's hard to break that habit.

I don't exercise. I hate it. I did when I was a new post-op and kept up with it for a while, but got bored with it. I maintain my weight with diet only. I'm way more active than I was, but I don't go to the gym or do any kind of formal exercise.

My dieticians still push low fat ( blech ) dairy and soy milk ( double blech ) as an alternative to dairy milk. Noooo thank you. I use full fat dairy and prefer cashew milk if I use an alt milk.

I started back on caffeine before I was supposed to. I will have a very occasional diet soda as well.

I also have alcohol once in a great while.

I strictly follow the big 3: protein first & keeping sugar/ simple carbs low, no drinking with meals, and taking supplements.

Edited for missing info...lol. I AM me, after all.

I woke up in between a memory and a dream...

Yeah, I heard a lot of people hate exercising. Good thing dieting accounts for 75% of weight loss.

I actually prefer low fat milk and skim milk, lol! Whole milk tastes too sugary for me. I think it's because it's what I'm used to.

I actually had some alcohol Saturday night, but it wasn't carbonated.

Good job on following the other rules! I'm still working on those, lol.

I don't know...I followed the "rules" of my surgery when I was trying to get to goal. Why wouldn't you! I was told the Weight loss window only last a couple of years...and then it's really hard to lose weight....so I took advantage of it. I ate lower carb (not low carb, just lower) and took all my suppliments-that is kind of the DS rule book.

Once I got to goal, I ate whatever I wanted. Again, as long as I was maintaining, after 10 years I had to go low carb again just to drop 20 lbs ...but now I'm back to eating normal.

I DID drink diet soda, which was not recommended.

BUT again....if you are not taking advantage of your WLS window by following the rules of your surgery, then you are really missing out on a great gift...after your first 2 years.....it does get harder. This is not directed at you....just a basic observation/comment.

So true! I am taking advantage of my tool right now. I'm working hard on doing better, though. Sometimes it's a challenge to not sneak a small bite of sweets and chips because I live with someone who eats what she wants to. She's going to have WLS eventually, though. So it'll get easier. :)

Do the best you can....you do not have to be perfect....but I am very competitive....so I "competed" with everyone that was having surgery. I wanted to get to goal by 1 year. I competed to get to that! ..and I almost lost the full 300 lbs before my 1 year anniversary.

You can do it!

(PS it doesn't get easier.....the person you are with may or may not adhere to the guidelines of surgery....you can't control what other people do....just what you do).

I eat in front of the tv, the computer, a book, my iPad.  Really if it takes me 45 minutes to eat .25 cup I'm not going to just stare at the wall!!
