Help - Massive Weight Gain
I had my stomach stapled in 2003. Since then i have been able to maintain a weight of between 130- 140 pounds. However, about 5 months ago i started to gain weight and have gained 50 pounds. My diet has not changed and my lifestyle has not changed. I had barium meal xray and the consultant said that my pouch was still the size of an egg and that I was not over eating. I suffer with chronic ibs and I tend to throw up after I eat - that has been the norm since my surgery. I have reduced my calorific intake to about 1000 calories and not lost a pound in fact gained. I walk everywhere. I am now so stressed out I cry myself to sleep most nights and I am starting to be afraid to eat. I am even more depressed than usual. My weight gain is all around my middle nowhere else. My doctor started me on thyroid meds about a month ago.
I am at my wits end, what has gone wrong and so quickly after 13 years and what can i do
If you are eating 1,000 calories per day, it is impossible to gain 50 pounds of fat in 5 months. You need to see your doctor and find out if something else is going on.

Since this could be very serious, find a good doctor, somewhere, soon.

To ukbabe007, in repose to your post that your surgeon is in Ca and you are in UK (not Grim's comment, but posting order seems confusing)
I'm not sure why you posted this in response to the suggestion to find a doctor and that your situation needed further professional investigation. I would have thought it an easy transition to from the suggesting to contact 'your surgeon' to finding one in your new area who could help.
I point this out, because it seemed a self-defeating type of response. Is there something else going on in your life that is making the regain even more difficult to tackle?

"I had barium meal xray and the consultant said that my pouch was still the size of an egg and that I was not over eating." I assume the conclusion was drawn since your pouch is still the size of an egg, that it hasn't been 'stretched' by overeating? I guess I'm having trouble with how a single test can conclusively say you aren't not consuming too many calories. We know slider foods would not stretch the pouch- but can pack in tons of calories.
What's the condition that causing need for thyroid meds? Make sure your dosage is appropriate- it take a while to find the accurate dosage. I had a total thyroidectomy and it took long time to get into a groove with dosage.

First and foremost, I'm so sorry that you're going through this. No one should be crying themselves to sleep wondering what is going on with their body. Please call your Dr. in the states and have a phone consult. Maybe he can recommend someone to see where you are (or at least what kind of Dr, ie, bariatric, general, gastro).
Best of luck and keep trying for a solution. It's out there...my prayers to you.
