Question about calories

hello everyone! I had surgery 2 weeks ago and so far everything is great and I've lost 12 pounds.  I'm tracking everything I eat and drink and I know I have to aim for over 60 grams of protein but was wondering what my total calories intake should be.  I've been averaging 400-500 a day.

Thank you in advance

Very early out I was getting in about 400 to 600 calories a day.  My nutritionist told me to stay around 800 calories a day at 6 months but mainly just work on getting in the protein and fluids in and avoid carbs.

You sound like you are on target but your surgeon should have guidelines for you as far as eating goes.  Have you seen a nutritionist?  If not it might be worth investing in a few meetings.

My insurance didn't cover nutritionists so I paid out of pocket so I knew what I was doing.

I agree with LadyTazz.  Best to talk with your surgeon/clinic.  For the 1st 3 months I was around 400-500 calories - I had a very slow progression to "real food".  Now at about 7 months I'm usually right around 800 calories.  It's a great practice to track everything - not just in the beginning, but always!

I was in the neighborhood of 400 - 500 for the first couple of months, then upped to 600 at month 4 or so.

If in doubt, call up your surgeon's office, a nurse could probably answer your question over the phone to help reassure you! :)

My RNY plan (St. Vincent Indianapolis)

0-6 months 600-800 calories, 40-60 carbs, 60-80 protein

6-12 months: 800-1200 cal., 60-80 carbs, 60-80 protein

12-18 months: 1100-1300 cal., 100-130 carbs, 80 protein

Maintenance: 1200-1400 cal., 130 carbs, 80 protein.

I personally stayed on the low side of calories and carbs and upped my protein for maintenance.

Best Wishes,

Penny
