My husband Michael, had his Roux en Y June of 2004. Heaviest weight 346. Post op down to 189 and did not look healthy. Around 220 he looks the healthiest. Early 2016, he started having problems eating foods that normally were safe for him. He would vomit more frequently. In October 2016, he went to tge Bariatric center to meet with doctor. He had an EGD that showed no reason for the increased vomiting. On follow up visit surgeon wanted to do exploratory laparoscopy to check for internal hernias causing the vomiting. Due too many adhesions it was converted to an open procedure with lysis of adhesions, but no hernias to cause the problem. Discharge home on Thanksgiving Day 2016 the following Wednesday went for post-op visit and told the doctor that Tuesday night into Wednesday he had been up vomiting and sharp pain on the left lower side he said to make sure to keep the bowels moving which we did. That following Saturday night into Sunday he ended up in the emergency room at our local hospital due to doubling over pain in the left lower abdomen and vomiting. CAT scan showed that the bowel distended and the surgeon on call was worried that has both could become gangrenous was transferred emergently to the hospital where the bariatric surgeon was on staff. At this time no surgery was done they put a percutaneous pigtail catheter into his Remnant stomach to drain the stomach. At this time we were told that eventually he was going to have to have a reversal because he would continue to have blockages. The catheter drainage did help the vomiting of bile. So he was discharged home with the drainage catheter hand surgeon said we would leave that in for 3 weeks that did not happen because pain and vomiting continued and on December 13th he was admitted back into the hospital and on December 15th he had reversal of his Roux NY surgery. He was discharged on December 22nd and then readmitted to the hospital on December 24th due to continuing to vomit in pain in the left side with any type of food or liquids. He is not vomiting undigested food only bile. He is belching, passing gas and having BM's. He is currently lost 30 pounds since this all started all of his labs are good but he is very weak due to poor nutrition just wondering if anybody has had this happened to them post reversal? will this get better eventually?

I am so sorry that your husband is going through this. I have not had a revision-but I've seen that the period immediately following surgery is rough...but most of the time the symptoms usually resolve quickly after surgery.

Have you asked your doctor for a TPN for your husband? It's a way of getting nutrition into your husbands system and bypassing his normal digestive process.

If the symptoms continue, I'd ask your doctor to have another surgeon come in and consult on the case. I know it's hard to do that with doctors, but this is your husbands life.

Today he had a PICC line inserted and will be started on TPN.  If he tolerates that well then he will be discharged home tomorrow on TPN infusions.

Over the last 10 years, I've seen people have the TPN because either their surgery had complications (and there was a time that some surgeons started doing them at the same time as WLS-to suppliment early nutrition. It will help him gain some strength until he can start eating on his own again.

Good luck to both of you!

Thank you!  This is so hard to watch.  He is not taking anything orally right now but amazed at the amount of bile he is vomiting!   I feel so helpless to him  :'(

Look up the word GASTROPARESIS. It doesn't have to be Diabetic Gastroparesis as I had open Roux EN Y Nov 24 2004 & was throwing up months later. Now my Gatroenterologist Dr thinks I would be better off with reversal surgery. I have not been able to eat Meat or Poultry since. Started at 398 lost 178 in 9 months flat. Hernia in Stomach is back & no DR wants to touch me because of 3 surgeries & gastroparesis is slow emptying of the stomach. Once you have 3 Surgeries in that area no dr will touch you again. Chief of Surgery at my local Hospital said "Pray all your intestines come out before you get to the Hospital" That was nice to say! Took years to finally find out that throwing up a lot is Gastroparesis.

So 13 plus years later & I sit in front of the garbage pail about 6-10 hours each day. It is not the dumping syndrome they tell you about after having Gastric bypass. For a height of 6 feet you should be at about 220 for a male. With my problems I got over 320 lbs but then Diabetes came back & then lost all that weight again but in general they say you gain about 20-25% back. Past 9 days I lost 15 lbs but also down to 250. I am very happy with that.

If you ever read this as it is past 1 year since your post, give me an update please.
