perforated ulcer.

Hi all,  I'm 10 years out from RNY. Very successful weight loss and have kept it off. Got lax on the no nsaids rule. Ended up in the ER Dec 1 in outrageous pain like I've never experienced before, emergency surgery, perforated ulcer. 10 days in hospital and now recovering at home. Just a reminder to everyone...NO NSAIDS!!  EVER!!!

I'm so sorry you went through this!! I hope you're recovering well. And thank you for this reminder!! With the type of work I do and aging I find my body hurting more and more after 12 hour days and have several times given into using NSAIDS!  Good reminder why we have that rule!

That's exactly how it happened for me. You only have to take Aleve once in the morning! Ugh! Never again!

Hi Leslie,

If you feel comfortable in doing so may I ask what you took how often and for how long? If not, PM me please.

The reasons I ask is I am entering the older zone and when I asked my surgeon over 12 years ago about NSAIDS and the RNY he said I would have to take a large amount over a very long time frame before they "may" cause an issue.

Thanks,

Kathy

Hi Kathy, Overall not that much. I took Aleve maybe twice a week over a one to two year period. Never more often, usually less, sometimes none at all in a week. Also never on an empty stomach.

Thank you so much. I'm much better now but geez! I just had to come here and warn others. My sister also had RNY a few years before me and she didn't know about the no nsaids rule.

Things like this need to be posted. So many of us can become complacent with our lives after surgery. So reading this may help someone.
