Ok-one one hand, this stinks because it is jobs lost, especially in a hard market and around christmas.

But did you see the blurb about "Americans changing tastes"?  How about Americans recognizing the food is carbs, fillers and other chemical crap that bloats us, gives us insulin spikes, makes us fat, and gives us excess calories when we have become a sedentary nation with sedentary jobs (not like you are burning those carbs working the family farm like grandpa).  How about it is Americans recognizing that food scientists have manipulating the food to a point where your tongue and mouth feel the "vanishing calorie" but your stomach and gut suck EVERY ONE of those calories out, leading to a bag of cheetos being eaten but with no mental "satisfaction".

So on one hand, it is sad. But on the other hand, I think this is also good news.

Take a good look at General Mills' full product line. They own a LOT of stuff that's not "tricky" cheetos and sure wouldn't have me celebrating people out of work.

  • Green Giant
  • Yoplait
  • Cascadian Farm fruit
  • Annie's

Not celebrating... my quotes are:

"Ok-one one hand, this stinks because it is jobs lost, especially in a hard market and around christmas".

I also noted it is sad.

I don't think she is 'celebrating people being out of work'. Bit hard on her. I think we all understand what she is trying to say.

As someone who is desperately trying to find a job I am really amazed by your post about General Mills.  Just imagine if all the companies who produce "bad foods" shut down.

I am pleased that American tastes appear to be moving away from junk food.

Re-read my post- I am NOT happy that jobs are lost.

I'd be skeptical to draw that conclusion from General Mills. If this was Coke or Frito-Lay, then sure, but "people are eating less cereal from this brand" could have all sorts of other meanings. Maybe people are just buying other brands of cereal, for all we know.

Other research says that Americans are eating slightly less fast food than in past years, but I certainly wouldn't draw that conclusion from this data.

I don't want to see people lose jobs, in any line of work... I do completely understand your take on how the culture of thinking is changing and people realizing that corporations are pumping crap out for us to consume... It's not healthy, and it does help lead us down the path to obesity and unhealthy lifestyles.

I cringe when my kids fill up on cereal/waffles/bagels/granola bars... I KNOW they aren't great for them, but at the same time, they want it, and it's cost effective when it comes to their snacking habits. (teens 17 & 14)

I try to buy a lot of cheese, lunchmeat, and other things they'll eat (without me cooking) that are protein forward and not overly processed, but the fact of the matter is, they'll pick the easy crap every time...

They are more mindful though, since I've had surgery. My son will say "I had protein before I had this!" LOL

I'm sorry, it's your subject line.  It implies that you are happy about this and shouldn't be.

My heart goes out to those families.  Christmas can be difficult enough on the finances, but throw losing your job into the mix and it can be an extremely sad and frightening time for the whole family.
