Reflections on 6 months
Today is my 6 months since my VSG. I can't believe how fast the time has gone and I never thought I'd be at this weight by now. When I tell her this, my surgeon kids with me that, yes it does work.
I'm down 71 pounds and feel great. Some things I've noticed:
- I'm down from a size 20 to 14/16 - officially out of plus sizes (yay!)
- I have more energy
- I can be on my feet for hours without pain
- I kill it at my spin class - my instructors are impressed!
- I can walk up 5 flights of stairs without being winded
- I can go to my yoga (or body pump, or any class at my gym) and not be or feel like the fattest one in the room
- I sleep better
While I have no regrets at all, there are some side effects and things I still need to work on:
- I still burp and fart like a sailor. It's actually pretty disgusting. I just joined a dating site and I worry how I'll handle this if I start seeing someone
- Some days I just don't get my 64 of water in - usually when I'm in back to back meetings at work. This has been an issue since day one but is much better
- I some days don't eat as much as I should
- I still get frustrated sometimes at how little I can eat - usually when I'm out at a restaurant
But all in all things are going well and I've adjusted fine. Most of the issues above I know are completely up to me.
I want to thank the community here for the support you've given me, in particular the "old-timers". I know many of you are years out of reaching your goal weight and could have easily moved on. I so appreciate that you still take time to help us newbies!
Onto the next six months!

Congratulations .
As for burping and getting - we all do that. Now how much - that is a question.
- Make sure you are not constipated. And even with daily BM - or digestive track is long so you can be constipated (full of it) and still get BM every day. The longer the left over stay in our system - the more gas the bacteria can generate cause a lot of gas. Btw - when I start burping - I know I get backed up and the gas forming in my small intestine can't go down so it goes up. That is my first symtoms of getting backed up. If I ignore it - pain is my second.
- Some foods are worse than other to cause gas. Even small amount of sugar alcohols (like in gum, or even chewable vitamins) would give me a lot of gas. Any carbonated drinks - same thing. Beans, too much raw veggies..even some cooked veggies. I had to eliminate some foods completely (gas is causing me way too much pain) and limit others to when I don't mind getting bloated. And gassy..

Thanks so much for the info. Have you done anything to help "move things along" so to speak? I take a probiotic, Benefiber and Ducolax every day but don't think that does the whole job.

I do take good probiotics. I think they are a must.
I take magnesium. Plus I take daily dose of Miralax. And if I feel that I am getting backed up again (burping and gas pain are my 2 clear signs) I increase the Miralx. Then after I get clean - I go back to my regular dose. Until next time.
