Question for the ketos and high protein eaters...I think

ive searched around on here and google and haven't quite found the answer.

sometimes after a meal, usually in the evening, my cheeks get quite flushed. Is this a side effect of ketosis? I've seen it can be common in early days, but I'm over two months out.

I mostly dismissed it, until the other night when the redness extend beyond my cheeks to include the whole side of right side of my face and my chin.

anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks so much!

Hi   I did find something on Web MD

http://www.webmd.com/diabetes/type-1-diabetes-guide/what-is- ketosis#2

It does mention flushed skin, not necessarily the face.  Do you test your urine for keytones??

I have some of these symptoms as well, I have ordered urine test strips to monitor for my self.  I am in no way suggesting this is what you should do, just sharing.

Thanks! I had kind of dismissed keto acidosis previously, because I'm not diabetic. But it's worth monitoring. I do have keto strips, but only use them occasionally because I usually eat the same things all the time. I'll start using them more consistently to see.

thanks again!

Rosacea or food allergies.

One side of my face gets red, hot and swollen when I eat foods I am alkergic to. Or spicy foods. Or food/drinks that cause my body to react to it.. I.e red wine...

I even get more blurry vision on that side.

Thanks Hala, I hoped you'd chime in! As I mentioned to Donna, I'll start tracking when it happens more closely to see if there is a common denominator.

thanks again!

If your blood sugar is not high, you cannot be in a state of ketoacidosis.  It's physically impossible, unless one is an alcoholic - there is an alcoholic ketoacidosis, too.  I've been on a ketogenic diet mostly for almost ten years, was also diabetic for much of it, and have never been in ketoacidosis.

Many things cause face flushing.  It sounds much more like an allergy, though.  Might be good to talk to a doctor.  Allergies and sensitivities can also be progressive. It could also be reactive hypoglycemia.  Might be good to check with the doctor just to be sure. :)

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

Thanks! I'm not drinking alcohol at all, so I can cross that off.

I hadn't considered an allergy, since I have never had any before. But I'll start monitoring more closely when it happens to see if there is a common denominator.

I have an apt with my family doc soonish, so I will bring it up then!

thanks again!

Good luck figuring it out:)

The one side of the face thing is curious.  That's why I'd definitely ask a doctor.  The next time it happens it might be interesting to try one benadryl and see if it helps.

I had bad reactions several times to dried fruit.  I had testing and was told I am allergic to sulfites.  Here are things that might cause it.  Getting tested for allergies will confirm it.

fresh and frozen shellfish such as shrimp and crab

wine

lettuce and other packaged salad greens

dried fruit

maraschino cherries

pickles

saurkraut

lemon, lime or grape juice

That's interesting.  I will add that to the list of things to watch for. I used to get pretty red in the face drinking wine sometimes (before pre op) and I have had a couple of the things on that list. Thanks!
