Dexa Scan, must have test before surgery....
The article on the home page reminded me to remind pre ops the importance of having a DEXA scan done before surgery. There is a potential for bone loss after WLS and you need this test for a base line. I lost about 17% of my bone mass a year after surgery. While that was upsetting since I had the test before we knew exactly what I had lost and started shots. Not only have I stopped the loss but have increased my bone density.
Talk to your surgeon about having one and it's a very easy test to have done.

I second this. A lot of people don't think they need one, maybe because they are younger, etc. But bone loss is real. Get the baseline scan done before surgery. It's a five minute xray, and totally painless.

It's worth noting that bone density is actually better for obese people because bone is built in response to trauma. More weight = more trauma. So there is the risk of bone loss due to mineral deficiency, but we're also out of luck because our bones are being exposed to less trauma due to our decreased weight. This is why it's VERY important for all of us to include weight bearing exercises in our new lifestyles - anything with impact is good. Running, walking, apparently line dancing is the best, and, if those aren't options, crushing cans with your feet has been shown to promote bone health.

Seriously? I understand as I have had to educate every PCP I have had. I am so glad you had the test. Not everyone has this happen but it's important to see the earliest changes and up your calcium, foods you eat and if necessary shots. LOL we are all headed to "older" age and I have seen the littlest break devastate the elderly's quality of life!

Kathy, which shot are you taking? How often do you take it? Have you had any bad side effects? I took Actonel for years but insurance stopped covering it so I have been taking generic fosamax for a year. I'm so afraid it will cause ulcers. Thanks for any info

forgot to add that I have osteopenia
I will remind you I tried to have one pre-surgery but was over the machines weight limit.... So not always possible and was very embarrassing....I was literally on the table ready to go when she realized I was too heavy.
Usually because of carrying around the excess weight you do have dense bones pre-surg.... it is just after that the changes come. I have had one now...but couldn't then.
